Jack Dorsey is now a Block Head and He Brought it Upon Himself

Jack Dorsey, the Twitter co-founder, and current Block CEO is no longer the payments firm's "chief executive officer."

Jack Dorsey is no longer the financial services firm Block's chief executive officer (CEO), instead, now, the executive is choosing to call himself "Block Head". Dorsey co-founded Square in 2009, and the company changed its name to Block in December. According to The Verge, the company filed an 8-K with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announcing the change, and of course, the new title came into effect on 4/20.

Block announced the change in a filing with US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Saturday. The new title "Block Head and Chairperson" becomes effective immediately, but Block's official page still lists his title as CEO (at the time of filing this piece).

"The change happened at Dorsey's request," according to the filing, which added that Block's bylaws also no longer require that the company have an officer with the title of CEO and President, the filing said. This would mean that anyone who succeeds Dorsey in his role could also be called Block Head.

The news apparently excited Elon Musk, who tweeted late Saturday with two fire emojis, while referencing Dorsey's new title. The Block CEO responded with a crown emoji and asked whether Elon Musk dropped the "Techno."

A very real regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission reflects how, this play on the term "blockhead" is not a joke. Yet like Elon Musk – who declared himself "Technoking" in March 2021 – the change may indeed be for the lolz.

Dorsey gave up the CEO title at Twitter last year and has said he will soon step down from its board, where he has served as a director since the company's earliest days. That's the same board that he thinks is marred by "dysfunction," which, well, takes one to know one.
