Anthropic is facing tough questions ahead of its IPO. Reports have claimed that the AI company has faced a net loss of USD 80.7 billion in the first half of 2026, up from USD 13 billion a year earlier. These stats are taken from a draft prospectus for a planned initial public offering that Reuters reviewed.
The reason behind the reported loss involves an increase in the estimated value of bonds that meant to convert into Anthropic shares, rather than cash costs tied to its operations. These accounting charges made up USD 72 billion of the total loss, the report said.
Despite the huge loss, Anthropic has seen a sharp rise in revenue as more customers use its Claude AI tools. Its revenue reached USD 16.8 billion in the third quarter of 2026. The growth is sequential. The Q2 revenue of the company also jumped more than double to USD 11.6 billion in the second quarter, from the first quarter.
However, the cost of running its AI services has also risen. The company spent nearly USD 9 billion on AI infrastructure in the first half, almost four times the amount it spent a year earlier. Anthropic needs powerful chips and large amounts of computing power to run its AI tools. It has also made major long-term deals to secure the resources it needs.
Amazon and Google have played major roles in Anthropic’s sales and distribution, as per the reports. Their cloud services help Anthropic run its AI tools and reach more customers. However, relying on a few major providers can bring risks. Higher prices, limited chip supplies, or a shortage of computing power could make it harder for the company to keep up with demand.

Anthropic’s planned IPO will put its finances under close watch. The reported loss includes large accounting charges; thus, it doesn’t mean that the company has lost the amont in cash. However, its rising costs and long-term deals must be a part to be concerned about.
In the coming months, the AI company must show that it can turn strong demand into steady income. As competition in the AI market grows, keeping costs under control will be just as important as attracting new customers. Its ability to balance growth with spending could shape investor interest in its IPO.
