Diablo 4 is one of the finest dungeon-crawling games that’s ready with its Season 9 update for July 2025.
The upcoming season will bring a formidable endgame challenge, Escalating Nightmares that will task players to beat two bosses.
The PTR event opens an opportunity for players to experience this content until June 3, 2025.
Diablo 4’s eighth season is almost at the edge of ending. As the game is preparing to enter the ninth season, curiosity about the upcoming content is growing. As the anticipations keep building, Blizzard has revealed one formidable endgame challenge to fuel it further. As of now, the roadmap indicates the official release of season 9 is set for July 2025 and will run until September 2025.
Season 9 of Diablo 4 is named Sins of the Horadrim, and the latest updates from Blizzard have enhanced the tension with the revelation of Escalating Nightmares, one of the deadly endgame challenges. The exciting part is this challenge intensifies the traditional Nightmare Dungeons and requires players to complete three consecutive dungeons. The twist is the difficulty and complexity will increase in each new dungeon.
After Season 8 of Diablo 4 received a mixed reception from gamers, Blizzard has to take steps and bring content to win over its audience once again. In this currently running Season 8, players aren’t at all happy with the leveling-up process and drop rate of items. To cover these complaints and offer the community something they love, Blizzard has unveiled the endgame challenge of the upcoming season.
Escalating Nightmares will offer three linked Nightmare Dungeons that players must complete sequentially. With each dungeon, players will face added difficulties like changing enemy behaviors, complicated dungeon conditions, and others. These will make every dungeon more challenging than the previous one.
Now, the most important part is to know how one can access Escalating Nightmares. To access this endgame challenge, players need to have an Escalation Sigil, a special key item. Notably, this key item can’t be crafted but can only be acquired through gameplay progression.
Importantly, the only method to get these sigils is to complete Strongrooms on minimum Torment I difficulty. Once completed, players will get Horadric Caches as rewards, and these sigils were dropped from Horadric Caches.
Players need to activate these sigils after acquiring them, and they will open the first dungeon. Now, as players complete each dungeon, a Horadric Portal will transport them to the next one. After the dungeons are done, players will face a boss battle against Exalted Astaroth and his monstrous hound, the Amalgam.
This encounter is particularly demanding because Astaroth and the Amalgam can split and attack players separately. This forces players to tackle two formidable foes at the same time. Therefore, this fight doesn’t only require skill and strategy but also a deep understanding of the game’s mechanics and the enemy’s moves.

Success in Escalating Nightmares depends on careful preparation and strategic planning. Players must build their characters with utmost care to survive all the challenges and compounded affixes. They must understand the challenge in each of the three dungeons and adapt strategies according to that.
Players can go for Horadric Spells for this specific endgame challenge. These are customizable powers introduced in Season 9, and they can provide players with a significant advantage against the bosses. Another thing to remember is Amalgam can’t be completely slain as long as Astaroth is alive. Even if players manage to kill the mount first, it will rise from the ashes eventually. So, the first one to be eliminated is Astaroth.
The rewards are not yet revealed, but players can expect to get high-tier loot, including rare items, and high-tier loot for conquering Escalating Nightmares.
Diablo 4 Season 9 is going to introduce a lot of exciting content, as per the current updates. The endgame is specifically going to be a compelling one with the Escalating Nightmares, which promises to elevate the traditional dungeon-crawling experience. For now, the exact release date of Season 9 hasn't been officially revealed, but the upcoming PTR will give them a chance to experience this content for a limited period.
PTR 2.3.0 starts on May 27, 2025, and will continue until June 3, 2025. During this period, players can try this content to determine how much Blizzard has improved upon Season 8.
