Netflix’s hit Japanese sci-fi thriller Alice in Borderland will return with Season 3 on September 25, 2025. For Indian audiences, the episodes will begin streaming at 12:30 pm IST on the same date as their global release. Following a three-year gap since the end of Season 2, which concluded with the mysterious appearance of the Joker card, the new season is set to take its mind-bending concept further.
The series’ main lead pair, Kento Yamazaki as Ryohei Arisu and Tao Tsuchiya as Yuzuha Usagi, are back to front the series. Both of them had exited the fatal Borderland game area, thinking they had returned to the real world. The dramatic twist at the end with the Joker card's appearance in the last frame, however, indicated that the game is far from being over.
Now, in Season 3, they have a new stage where survival is not only about outrunning danger, but also figuring out what’s real and what’s not.
The new season sees a return of some major players from previous episodes. Some of the confirmed returning cast include:
Hayato Isomura as the scheming Banda
Ayaka Miyoshi as the rational Ann
Katsuya Maiguma as the manipulative Yaba
Dori Sakurada as the hot-headed and unpredictable Niragi
Sho Aoyagi as the former militant Aguni
Yutaro Watanabe as the loyal Tatta
Tsuyoshi Abe as diplomat-turned-judge Kuzuryu
Nobuaki Kaneko as the charismatic leader, Hatter
Riisa Naka as game master Mira Kano
However, two fan-favorite characters remain unconfirmed: Nijirō Murakami’s Chishiya, the genius strategist, and Aya Asahina’s Kuina, the agile fighter with a strong fan following. Their absence from Netflix’s official announcements has sparked speculation online, although fans remain hopeful for surprise appearances.

Season 3 introduces an entirely new cast of characters to the world of Borderland. The most noticeable among them is Kento Kaku, who portrays Ryuji, an enigmatic scholar-type obsessed with the game's conditions, particularly the Joker phase.
He is accompanied by:
Koji Ohkura
Risa Sudou
Hiroyuki Ikeuchi
Tina Tamashiro
Kotaro Daigo
Hyunri
Sakura Kiryu
Yugo Mikawa
Akana Ikeda
While character details have not been revealed, initial teasers in the trailer indicate that this team shall either confront or join Arisu as he dives back into the unknown.
In the original manga, the Joker card represented the ultimate stage of the Borderland, not a game but a trial of the players’ view on reality. Season 3 seems to follow suit.
As indicated by the official synopsis, the new season picks up where life seems to be at its most real. Arisu and Usagi return to Tokyo, settling down in peace. However, when Usagi vanishes without warning, Arisu is pulled into a deeper world of the Borderland. It is here that he encounters Ryuji, who knows the Joker stage.
This season, the game seems to be on a metaphysical plane. Arisu must navigate between illusion and memory, attempting to determine if the game ever truly began or if it was merely an illusion.
The trailer, released by Netflix earlier this month, indicates a darker and more mental season. While previous episodes focused on physical survival through lethal games, Season 3 appears to be about psychological warfare. Haunting imagery, shattered memories, and dreamlike game environments are prevalent in the teaser. Arisu is more emotionally broken, and the mood is denser. Games hinted at include gigantic group tests and mysterious mind games, possibly aimed at testing one’s trust, faith, and self-awareness.

The show’s creative heart is intact. Shinsuke Sato returns to helm the show, with Yasuko Kuramitsu co-penning the script. Taro Kawazu handles the cinematography, and Yutaka Yamada returns as composer, whose moody score has been a significant contributor to shaping the show's tone. Production company Robot, alongside co-producer The Seven, continues the production values that have made Alice in Borderland one of Japan’s largest Netflix hits.
The much-anticipated Season 3 is going to be more than a sequel; it’s a philosophical intensification. The Joker card introduces a new threat: one rooted in doubt, identity, and the boundaries of perception. For Arisu and Usagi, death may have been an easy escape. Figuring out what’s real could be the real game now.
Regardless of whether fan-favorites make a comeback or not, and whether the Joker becomes a game master or something much darker, this much is certain: Netflix is laying its chips big on a darker, deeper interpretation of the Borderland universe.
