The OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026 says generative AI can support learning when clear teaching principles guide it. But when used without pedagogical guidance, it can improve performance on tasks without producing real learning gains.
AI-built tutoring tools are starting to appear in more schools. The OECD notes that generative AI may work like a tutor, a learning partner, or an assistant. This only holds when it is used with a clear teaching goal.
These newer intelligent tutoring systems do not have to follow fixed scripts. They can ask questions and offer small hints. They can also change their approach while talking with the learner, not just after a preset step.
The OECD also points to tools meant for teachers. These authoring tools can help educators draft and customize lessons. They can also help with questions and practice simulations. Teachers can review the AI output, edit it, and approve it. That way, teachers keep control of the learning direction.
Adaptive learning is likely to grow as well. AI systems can change what a student sees based on how they are doing. This way, materials and support can better match individual needs.
Overall, the aim differs from one-size-fits-all lessons. The goal is to help teachers spot learning gaps and give each student the right kind of support.

The competences are arranged in three progression stages: Acquire, Deepen, and Create.
According to the OECD, educational GenAI can support human work without removing teachers’ agency. Thus, collaboration becomes a key issue.

Education technology will likely remain closely tied to changing workforce demands.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 says that by 2030, 170 million jobs will be added and 92 million will be cut. That leaves a net gain of 78 million jobs overall.

The OECD also reports that in 2024, 37% of lower secondary teachers used AI as part of their work. Another 57% said it helps them improve lesson plans.
UNESCO guidance also calls for safe, careful AI use.
As tools get better, immersive tech and simulations may show up more often in learning. The goal would be to add to what happens in class, not replace it.
Even so, more AI tutors and agentic AI will bring tough questions. People will want to know how AI-generated information is created, verified, and evaluated. UNESCO plans to address these topics at Digital Learning Week 2026.
