Several Places That Were Designed with Data in Mind

Creating a business specifically based on data collection of human behavior can make a business much more successful in the short term and down the road. Understanding why customers act in certain ways to specific stimuli can help business owners to optimize their business like never before. And with all of the data available in the digital age, it's almost bad business to not take advantage of this when designing new business locations.

If you are looking to similarly optimize your business based on the information gleaned from big data and consumer analysis, you should take a note from the companies or businesses listed below. We have found three unique places there were designed with data in mind that will really benefit their overall bottom line.

Casinos

If you've ever wondered why all casinos seem to look the same, you're not alone. In fact, there's a well-refined, exact science behind the design of casinos. For example, the bright lights of the casino attract customers to stay and play some fun games. If it were darker in casinos, then the customers may get sleepy or tired and would play fewer games. This is also why casinos have little to no natural lighting. This helps keep the gamers having fun and playing the slot machines because they will not be distracted from the natural lighting and will not be concerned about what time it is, so they'll play even more games.

Grocery Stores

It is not a coincidence that all of the staples that you need are located at the very back of the grocery store. In fact, many grocery stores use data to design the look of their stores. Data and research shows that people typically come to the store with just a few staples in mind that they need to pick up. Maybe they are just looking for milk, eggs, and cheese and want to get in and get out. If these grocery staples were located in the front of the store, it would be very easy for customers to buy exactly what they need without browsing the rest of the food in the store.

By placing the milk, eggs, and cheese in the back of the grocery store, the stores actually force people to walk up and down many of the aisles. When people are forced to walk through difference aisles, data shows that they are more likely to discover products or food they didn't initially come in for. They will walk by a box of Pop-Tarts and realize they want to buy it even though they didn't come into the store looking to buy Pop-Tarts. By utilizing this big data on customers, grocery stores can get their customers to buy much more than what they original came into purchase.

Hollister

Finally, Hollister is a great example of a company that made changes to their stores based on data about their target market. For example, Hollister has very loud music playing in their stores because they want to recreate the fun and carefree vibe of a music festival or concert. When people hear the loud music, their inhibitions are lowered and they are more relaxed and more likely to buy a lot of clothing from Hollister.

In addition, Hollister has very dim lighting in their stores because data shows that when shopping in darker places with dim mood lighting, customers are more disoriented. When customers cannot fully focus on the one thing they came in to buy at Hollister, they are more likely to get distracted and shop around for more than what they came in for.

Overall, there are several different businesses that utilize data analysis when designing their physical location. If you are an entrepreneur or considering opening up your own storefront, you can definitely learn a lesson or two from the businesses who were successful in using data to design their stores.
