Bitcoin’s move above USD 80,000 has started pulling the broader crypto market higher, but the latest data suggest the rally is turning into more than a simple Bitcoin-led rebound.

Between August 19 and August 22, the market capitalization of cryptocurrencies excluding Bitcoin increased by approximately USD 215 billion, a gain of more than 24% in three days. Total2, a cryptocurrency market index that tracks the total combined value of all digital assets except Bitcoin, has moved back above USD 1 trillion.

This rapid expansion has revived discussion of an altcoin season, although the evidence remains mixed.

Market Breadth Has Improved Sharply

One of the strongest signals comes from long-term moving averages. During the weakness that began in late 2025, approximately 80% to 85% of Binance-listed altcoins were trading below their 200-day moving averages. The trend has reversed significantly, with 56% now trading above the 200-day level.

That indicates the rally is spreading across more tokens instead of being concentrated in Bitcoin and a handful of large-cap cryptocurrencies.

Major assets have participated strongly. Ethereum gained around 30% over five days, while Solana advanced roughly 31% as Bitcoin reclaimed USD 80,000.

XRP, Zcash and Hyperliquid have also posted particularly strong gains during the broader recovery.

Bitcoin’s Breakout Created the First Wave

Altcoin rallies often depend on Bitcoin establishing a strong trend first. BTC’s move was supported by nearly USD 1.9 billion in spot ETF inflows last week, improving regulatory sentiment and a weaker US dollar.

Once Bitcoin moved decisively higher, investors became more willing to take additional risk in Ethereum and smaller cryptocurrencies.

This rotation can accelerate as altcoins generally have lower liquidity and market capitalization, meaning incremental capital can produce larger percentage moves.

Altseason is Not Confirmed Yet

Despite the surge, market indicators do not yet show a full altcoin season. CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index stands at 38, far below the commonly used threshold of 75. Bitcoin dominance remained around 59.8%, showing that BTC still controls a large share of the overall market.

Leverage is also increasing. Around 85% of altcoins reportedly have funding rates above their historical averages, which can support momentum but also increase the risk of sharp liquidations if prices reverse.

Bitcoin Still Holds the Key

The current move looks more like an early broadening of the rally than a confirmed altseason. For that transition to strengthen, Bitcoin likely needs to remain stable while capital continues rotating into Ethereum, large-cap altcoins and eventually smaller assets.

If Bitcoin experiences another sharp selloff, those higher-beta tokens could fall faster. If BTC consolidates above its breakout zone, however, the conditions for a sustained altcoin rotation are becoming considerably stronger.

FAQs:

1. Why are altcoins rising after Bitcoin’s breakout?

Bitcoin’s move above USD 80,000 improved market sentiment and encouraged investors to take more risk. Strong ETF inflows, a weaker US dollar and better regulatory expectations also helped support the broader crypto rally.

2. How much did the altcoin market grow between August 19 and August 22?

The market capitalization of cryptocurrencies excluding Bitcoin increased by about USD 215 billion over the three-day period. Total2 also moved back above USD 1 trillion.

3. Is this already an altcoin season?

Not yet. CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index stands at 38, below the commonly used threshold of 75. Bitcoin dominance also remains high at around 59.8%.

4. Which altcoins have performed strongly in the rally?

Ethereum gained around 30% over five days, while Solana advanced about 31%. XRP, Zcash and Hyperliquid have also posted strong gains during the broader market recovery.

5. What could confirm a stronger altcoin rotation?

A sustained altseason would likely require Bitcoin to remain stable while capital continues moving into Ethereum, large-cap altcoins and smaller tokens. Improving market breadth and a decline in Bitcoin dominance would provide stronger confirmation.
