ASML’s third-quarter results show artificial intelligence spending sustaining demand for advanced lithography equipment at a pace ahead of analyst expectations. The Dutch equipment maker reports quarterly net sales of $13.2 billion and net income of $5.7 billion, and lifts full-year sales guidance to between $49.7 billion and $50.9 billion, citing accelerating AI infrastructure demand and capacity constraints extending into the next two years. Analysts at Abishai Financial Asia Pte. Ltd. are examining what the revised trajectory signals for semiconductor valuations and sector concentration.

Net margin rises to 42.5% from 31.3% in the preceding quarter, when net income stood at $3.3 billion. Basic earnings per share for the quarter come in at $14.6, about 20.8% above consensus, while gross margin reaches 57.5%, above guidance. Around $565 million of quarterly net income is a one-off gain from revaluing ASML’s stake in Mistral AI, unrelated to core trading.

Record quarterly sales top estimates by only around 0.4%, which marks the beat as profit-led rather than broad-based. Guidance for the final quarter points to sales of between $16 billion and $17.2 billion, implying full-year growth of around 36%. Memory sales are expected to rise 75% for the full year and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) revenue more than 45%.

Chief Executive Christophe Fouquet indicates that customer conversations now reach well beyond next year, with some counterparties discussing deliveries around the turn of the decade. DRAM chipmakers appear most receptive to those early talks. The order book spans TSMC, Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron and Intel alongside Terafab, the Texas facility under development by Elon Musk to supply SpaceX and Tesla.

The raised guidance and the lengthening order horizon alter how investors are likely to read ASML’s results over the coming quarters. The binding constraint, as Abishai Financial Asia’s Director of Private Equity Daniel Coventry sees it, is “no longer whether customers want the machines, but whether they can be built quickly enough”. As the world’s only maker of EUV lithography systems, ASML carries the risk profile of a business limited by its own output rather than by falling orders.

The 30% capacity expansion previously targeted for each of the next two years now looks too modest against customer demand. Next year’s production schedule is close to fully allocated, with at least 80 EUV systems committed. ASML broke ground on a new Eindhoven campus last month, but its first phase is not expected to open until late in the decade. Chief Financial Officer Roger Dassen plans to bridge the gap with upgrades to installed tools and faster models such as the NXE:3800F, due early next year.

ASML shares currently trade at 31.5 times forward earnings, against 20 times for the S&P 500, a premium that prices in its sole-supplier position. That multiple sits near the company’s five-year median of 31.6 times, yet default insurance costs across the US technology sector now stand at record highs. Coventry frames the trade-off as “paying a full price for certainty just as the cost of financing AI begins to climb”. Jefferies analyst Janardan Menon warns that doubts over earnings two and three years out could push the multiple into the low twenties in a downturn.

China represents the clearest geographic risk, having generated 33% of ASML’s revenue last year. Its share of system sales fell to 19% in the first quarter, from 36% in the preceding quarter. The proposed MATCH Act could extend existing export restrictions by limiting servicing of deep ultraviolet machines installed there, a restriction JPMorgan estimates could cut earnings per share by up to 10% once in force. Installed Base Management, the servicing and upgrade arm, grew 26% last year on a globally spread fleet and partially offsets that concentration, though China exposure remains relevant to stress testing.

Exposures that look unrelated in calm markets tend to move together under stress, which raises familiar concentration questions for portfolios built around ASML and its peers. Deloitte asks how capital spending would hold if AI demand softened, the scenario that multi-factor stress tests are designed to capture. Abishai Financial Asia continues to track these developments within its semiconductor capital flow analysis, with Coventry viewing valuation, financing sentiment, China exposure and capacity timelines as “the variables that will decide how durable this cycle proves to be”.
