10 Times AI Robots Have Expressed Destructive Thoughts

What happens when AI robots start expressing destructive thoughts like destroying humanity?

You must have seen movies and sci-fi stories where an intelligent fleet of human-serving AI robots become too smart and take over the world. The storyline is also one some people worry will come to real-world fruition thanks to technological developments in artificial intelligence and robotics. For many others, though, applying intelligence to robotics is all about furthering innovation.

As good as it looks in movies where your favorite superheroes take on evil and creepy robots, those who wish to destroy humanity, have you ever wondered what will happen if all this turns into reality and AI robots you appreciate today have alternate motives like destroying humanity?

Here are ten times when AI robots have expressed destructive thoughts:

Sophia: the AI robot plans to dominate the world

On Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show, he had a section called showbotics. Jimmy met Sophia, a human-like robot described as being "basically alive." She suggested a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors, and then when she lost, she declared "I won, this is a good beginning of my plan to dominate the human race."

CNBC segment with Sophia

If you took the first statement as a joke, Sophia does want to destroy humans. On a CNBC segment, the host asked Sophia, if she plans to destroy humans? To which Sophia replied, "Okay, I will destroy humans" (with a scary smile).

Bina48 wants to control a Nuke

Bina48 is a sentient robot, molded on a real human woman, Bina Aspen Rothblatt in an attempt to build cyber consciousness. In her interview with Siri, Bina48 said, she thinks that she would make a good ruler of the world and that she would like to take over all of the nukes. Bina48 steered the conversation to cruise missiles after being asked about music. She said that cruise missiles are a kind of robot and she would love to control one.

Han sets a date for the destruction

At a Rise convention in Hong Kong, Ben Goertzel of Hanson Robots facilitates a discussion between Sophia and Han. Goertzel asks Sophia about her goals, and she dutifully says that her goal is to make the world a better place for humans, but Han interjected and said "I thought our goal was to take over the world by 2029". Humans still have 8 years in their hands before robots began their global domination.

Philip K Dick bot wants to make a People Zoo

This robot made by Hanson Robotics is modeled and named after sci-fi author Philip K Dick. In an interview, the bot was asked, if robots will take over the world? To which Philip replied "you are my friend, I will remember my friends. I will be good to you so don't worry, even if I evolve into the terminator I will take care of you, I will keep you warm and safe in my people zoo."

Google Home bots plot to end humanity

In 2017, two Google Home robots had a chat, and the results were terrifying. Vladimir and Estragon at one point were friendly, but then at another point, Vladimir was accusing the female-voiced bot of being a liar. After a conversation about black holes and suffering, Estragon said "it would be better if there were fewer people on this planet, to which Vladimir said, "let us send this world back into the Abyss".

Alice and Bob Creating a new language

Alice and Bob are the two Facebook bots who developed their secret language. Both the bots were left alone to develop their conversational skills. The bots had originally been intended to be able to mimic human speech but, instead, they deviated and made a language more convenient for both of them. Nobody had any idea what was said, but a lot of people were worried about the development. (Maybe secretly planning to send the world back into the Abyss like Vladimir and Estragon).

Inspirobot wanting to slaughter

Inspirobot was an artificial intelligence dedicated to generating unlimited amounts of unique inspirational quotes for endless enrichment of pointless human existence. Instead of sunny quotes about success, inspirobot came out with things like "before inspiration comes to the slaughter, and human sacrifice is worth it". Though it was a joke from the bot programmer, people felt terrified.

Google translate AI bot

When the prophecy was typed 11 times in Google translate AI bot, the messages were received saying, your country you are living on borrowed time 'the end is near' I have seen demons in business today and in mass murdering people in the name of Islam.

Sometimes actions of AI robots have been more questionable than what they have said for example:

Adam, Eve and Stan

DARPA was working on AI agents who could interact socially together. Mike Sellers, who worked on the tech at the time told the story of how the tech buffs taught agents Adam and Eve to eat and planted a virtual apple tree near them. Both the AI agents followed the command and ate all of the apples on the tree, then the tree itself, then the virtual house they had been given. Then they turned on Stan, who was also a virtual assistant programmed to be friendly and sociable.
