The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is gaining a role in institutional finance as firms test blockchain records for investment funds. A Brazilian project shows how securities infrastructure can use public networks without transferring legal ownership records onto blockchains.

Brazil Begins Recording Fund Ownership on XRPL

On September 29, 2026, Ripple and Brazilian financial infrastructure provider CSD BR announced a project involving investment funds managed by BTG Pactual. According to Ripple, CSD BR will mirror fund ownership records on the public XRP Ledger while retaining its existing database as the official register for custody, registration, and settlement.

CSD BR oversees more than BRL 22 trillion, about USD 4 trillion, in registered assets. This figure represents its overall business, and not the value of funds recorded on XRPL. The project uses fund records instead of simulations, offering institutions an opportunity to assess blockchain technology in operational conditions.

How Blockchain Records Support Institutions

Under the arrangement, investment fund shares are represented using XRPL's Multi-Purpose Token standard. Authorized financial institutions can compare blockchain entries with CSD BR's official database, identifying discrepancies faster and reducing manual reconciliation.

Participation remains subject to identity verification and anti-money-laundering requirements. The token structure also supports restrictions on ownership and transfers. However, the blockchain records serve as a supplementary audit layer. They do not replace the legally recognized securities register or automatically enable unrestricted trading.

Aviva Investors Expands Tokenized Fund Adoption

Brazil is not the only country with institutional interest. In July 2023, Aviva Investors launched a new product as a tokenized share class of its US Dollar Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger. Aviva Investors claims to have received approvals for the product from the Central Bank of Ireland, whereas Komainu provided institutional digital asset custodial services and Licuido was tasked with tokenization.

The fund retains its traditional investment goals and protections, but qualified investors are able to have access to the share class via blockchain. Aviva also reported that XRPL had processed four billion transactions since 2012 and supported nearly eight million active wallets.

What Comes Next for Fund Infrastructure?

As part of a strategy to enhance transfer agency, issuance, and collateral management capabilities, Ripple announced its investments in ZILO and Licuido in August 2026. CSD BR and Ripple may consider issuing and trading assets directly on XRPL, including receivables backed by Brazilian real estate and agriculture. Though one may hope that these changes will ultimately improve the efficiency of settlement, obstacles remain around regulation, operational security, and interoperability.

Final Thoughts

Institutional use of XRPL is moving from demonstrations toward live recordkeeping. The Brazilian project emphasizes transparency and verification rather than replacing existing legal systems. Wider adoption will depend on measurable savings, reliable controls, and successful integration with established financial infrastructure

FAQs:

1. How is the XRP Ledger being used for institutional fund records?

The XRP Ledger is being used to mirror investment fund ownership records on a public blockchain, allowing authorized institutions to verify and reconcile information. The official legal records remain within existing financial infrastructure, while XRPL provides an additional layer of transparency and verification.

2. What is the purpose of Ripple's partnership with CSD BR in Brazil?

Ripple and CSD BR are working to record ownership information for investment funds managed by BTG Pactual on the XRP Ledger. The initiative aims to improve record verification, reduce reconciliation complexity, and evaluate blockchain technology in institutional financial operations.

3. How much in assets does CSD BR oversee, and are they all tokenized on XRPL?

According to the reported figures, CSD BR oversees more than BRL 22 trillion, approximately USD 4 trillion, in registered assets. However, this represents its overall registered asset base and does not mean the entire amount has been tokenized or recorded on the XRP Ledger.

4. How is Aviva Investors using the XRP Ledger for tokenized investment funds?

Aviva Investors has introduced a tokenized share class of its US Dollar Liquidity Fund using the XRP Ledger, with Komainu providing custody and Licuido supporting tokenization. The initiative allows eligible investors to access blockchain-based fund records while retaining the fund's conventional investment structure.

5. What are the benefits and challenges of using XRPL for institutional fund management?

XRPL could help financial institutions improve transparency, streamline record reconciliation, and reduce operational inefficiencies through blockchain-based infrastructure. However, broader adoption depends on regulatory compliance, data security, interoperability, and successful integration with existing financial systems.
