In Web3, Trust Is Becoming the Biggest Competitive Advantage | Varun Datta

Varun Datta, Web3 venture capitalist and CEO of Truth Ventures, explores why trust, governance and transparency are becoming key competitive advantages as the Web3 industry matures.

For much of Web3’s early development, innovation was measured in terms of speed. New protocols were launching almost weekly, blockchain projects competed to attract users through rapid growth, and decentralised finance expanded at breakneck pace. While this experimentation helped to move the industry forward, it also exposed weaknesses in governance, long-term resilience, and transparency.

Today, the conversation is starting to change. As institutional investors, banks, and multinational businesses explore blockchain technology, trust has become one of the most valuable assets. It’s fair to say that the projects attracting serious capital are not necessarily those that promise fast returns, but those that demonstrate strong governance, operational maturity, and regulatory readiness.

Venture capitalist and CEO of Truth Ventures, Varun Datta has consistently argued that the next phase of Web3 will be less defined by speculative excitement, and more by robust digital infrastructure. As regulation develops across major markets, the perspective is becoming increasingly relevant.

“The early stages of Web3 were naturally driven by experimentation and speculation, but the market is maturing. What interests me now is the infrastructure underneath it all. The projects capable of supporting real economic activity over the long term are where I believe the greatest opportunities will emerge.” - Varun Datta

Web3 Is Entering A Different Era

The first generation of Web3 was largely driven by retail participation. Developers built decentralised applications, new blockchain ecosystems emerged with speed, and cryptocurrency exchanges expanded rapidly. Innovation was flourishing, but governance couldn’t keep up.

Small contract exploits, high-profile exchange failures, and governance disputes proved that technical capability alone was not enough to build lasting businesses. Confidence began to suffer, regulators intensified their scrutiny, and institutional investors became more selective about where they were investing.

However, instead of slowing innovation, these events have encouraged an overall better evolution of the market. Businesses are placing greater emphasis on security audits, transparent decision making, and compliance frameworks. As such, these are no longer reviewed as an administrative necessity, but as competitive advantages instead.

Institutional Capital Demands Confidence

Pension funds, banks, assets managers, and listed companies cannot base investment decisions solely on ambitious ideas or community enthusiasm. Instead, they require evidence that projects can withstand regulatory oversight, maintain strong governance over time, and manage operational risks well.

The thing is - for institutions, trust is measurable. It’s reflected through audited financial reporting, transparent governance structures, independent security assessments, clear accountability, and regulatory compliance.

Each of these qualities reduce uncertainty, which makes adoption easier for organisations with significant financial responsibilities.

Regulation Is Becoming A Growth Enabler

For a while there, regulation was shown as the greatest obstacle facing Web3. Many feared that increased oversight would stifle innovation, or discourage entrepreneurial activity. But, the reality in 2026 seems different.

Across multiple jurisdictions, clearer regulatory frameworks are reducing uncertainty for both businesses and investors. Europe’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework for example, provides greater legal clarity for companies operating within the digital asset ecosystem, while regulators in other major markets continue developing standards around digital finance infrastructure, and stablecoins.

Recent developments, including Circle receiving final regulatory approval to establish a national trust bank in the US, further illustrate how regulatory engagement is becoming part of long-term growth strategies, rather than something companies are trying to avoid.

So, instead of creating barriers like it was seen to in the past, well-designed regulations can provide the confidence institutional investors require before deploying substantial capital into emerging technologies.

Governance Is No Longer An Afterthought

We have to say that one of the defining characteristics that separate today’s strongest Web3 companies from earlier generations is governance.

Early decentralised projects put rapid community expansion over clearly defined decision making processes. As such, when projects matured, many found that decentralisation alone did not automatically produce effective governance.

Questions surrounding treasury management, token location, and community voting are continuing to influence investor confidence.

Strong governance now goes beyond token-holder participation. It includes independent risk management, cybersecurity practices, financial controls, transparent communication, and more.

As Varun Datta has observed through his commentary on digital infrastructure, durable technology businesses are built on systems that continue to perform long after market enthusiasm fades. It’s true that governance plays an important role in creating this durability in business.

“Good governance becomes more important as a company grows. It gives investors confidence that decisions are being made responsibly, risks are understood, and the business can continue operating effectively when market conditions change. That resilience is particularly important in Web3.” - Varun Datta

Transparency Builds Competitive Advantages

Transparency has become one of the most effective ways for Web3 organisations to differentiate themselves. Projects that openly communicate security practices, publish independent audits, explain token economics, and acknowledge operational risks rather than generate greater confidence than those relying primarily on their marketing.

Transparency also benefits customers. Enterprise users considering blockchain adoption need reassurance that service providers operate responsibly, particularly when handling digital assets, sensitive data, or infrastructure that is mission critical.

Why Reputation Matters More Than Ever

Reputation has always influenced business success, but in Web3 it’s becoming increasingly quantifiable. Institutional partners evaluate a number of factors, including governance records, and operational history, alongside technological innovation.

Companies demonstrating consistency over several years often find themselves better positioned to secure partnerships, attract funding, and expand internationally.

On the other hand, projects associated with governance failures, weak compliance practices, or opaque financial structures may struggle to gain credibility, regardless of their overall capabilities. Trust increases over time, and companies need to remember that.

The Future Will Reward Sustainable Builders

Web3 continues to evolve rapidly, but priorities are obviously shifting.

Innovation is still important, but sustainable innovation increasingly depends on accountability, governance, and regulatory maturity. The companies defining the next decade are unlikely to be those pursuing the greatest short-term visibility. Instead, it will be the organisations capable of combining operational discipline with technological excellence.

Rather than viewing trust and innovation as opposing forces, leading businesses are starting to recognise that trust enables innovation to scale responsibly.

Final Thoughts

The competitive landscape within Web3 is changing. Technical innovation remains vital, but it is no longer good enough on its own. Governance, transparency, and regulatory readiness are becoming the characteristics that distinguish durable businesses from short-lived projects.

Varun Datta’s continued emphasis on digital infrastructure reflects this broader evolution. As institutional investors place greater value on resilience, compliance, and long-term operational strength, the industry’s biggest opportunities might not lie in the next trend, but instead in building the trusted foundations that allow Web3 to fulfill its long-term potential.

“The biggest opportunities in Web3 may ultimately come from the infrastructure that people stop talking about because it simply works. If blockchain technology is going to support mainstream financial and digital systems, it needs to be reliable, compliant and trusted. That is where I believe long-term value will be created.” - Varun Datta

In the years that are coming, trust is unlikely to be just another feature of Web3 businesses. It may well be the defining competitive advantage instead.
