The Tata Sons board approved a fresh five-year term for N Chandrasekaran as executive chairman, reversing his earlier decision to not seek reappointment. Reportedly, the decision came at a board meeting in Mumbai on September 17.
Chandrasekaran currently serves his second five-year term, which is scheduled to end in February 2027. In August, he said that he would not seek another term, setting the stage for a leadership transition at the Tata Group.
The decision marks a reversal from Chandrasekaran's announcement in August that he would not seek reappointment when his current term ends on February 20, 2027, news agency Reuters reported. The reasons behind the change were not immediately clear, the news agency added, citing a source familiar with the matter. The latest board decision changes that course and keeps him at the helm for another five years, subject to the required shareholder process.
Chandrasekaran became Tata Sons chairman in 2017 after previously serving as CEO of Tata Consultancy Services. His continuation comes at a critical juncture for the group, with Tata Sons facing regulatory and governance challenges.
The leadership decision also comes amid differences among Tata Sons’ key stakeholders. Tata Trusts holds a controlling 66% stake in Tata Sons. Reuters reported that the reasons behind Chandrasekaran’s change of position were not disclosed.
Experts suggest that Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata opposed the resolution on Chandrasekaran’s reappointment. The decision therefore highlights the continuing governance differences within the group.
