Samsung Cuts Galaxy Fold Weight by 75g in 8 Generations

Samsung has reduced the Galaxy Fold’s weight from 276g to 201g since 2019. Across eight generations, hinge redesigns, thinner displays, lighter materials, and component changes helped cut weight while adding stronger hardware and improved foldable features.

Samsung has cut 75 grams from its Galaxy Fold lineup since 2019, taking weight from 276 grams to 201 grams. The Galaxy Z Fold8 reached the milestone in 2026 after eight generations of engineering. 

Samsung achieved the reduction through hinge redesigns, thinner display structures, lighter materials and detailed component changes. The company also reduced folded thickness from 17.1mm to 8.9mm in the lineup.

The weight reduction reflects Samsung's effort to make foldable smartphones easier to carry without sacrificing flagship features. The latest Galaxy Z Fold8 launched in 2026 with a new wider design and weighs 201 grams. 

Samsung developed the device through changes across the hinge, display, internal architecture, and materials. The company also launched the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra at 215 grams alongside it.

The journey did not start with continuous weight cuts. The Galaxy Z Fold2 gained six grams in 2020 and reached 282 grams. Samsung used those extra grams for a larger 6.2-inch cover display and a more capable Hideaway Hinge. The change made the closed phone far more practical for everyday tasks.

Samsung then began reducing the weight through successive hinge improvements. The Galaxy Z Fold4 replaced the earlier gear-based movement with a linear mechanism that weighed 21% less. The Galaxy Z Fold5 introduced the Flex Hinge, which allowed the display to curve through a waterdrop-style fold.

The Galaxy Z Fold6 refined the dual-rail structure before the Galaxy Z Fold7 delivered a major thickness reduction. Its folded body measured 8.9mm and weighed 215 grams. Samsung carried the engineering progress into the Galaxy Z Fold8, which added Flex Titanium to its display structure.

The new material includes a titanium alloy film measuring only tens of micrometers. Samsung also precision-machined display support structures to around 0.2mm. Engineers refined machining, tooling and cooling processes to maintain accuracy at such thin dimensions.

Samsung also examined nearly 270 components and more than 180 auxiliary parts. Engineers removed around 15 auxiliary parts and redesigned many remaining components. Some changes reduced individual parts by as little as 0.001 grams.

Samsung said, “No single material or component made that transformation possible.” The company credited eight generations of engineering for the overall reduction.

The recovered space also allows for more capable hardware. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra carries a 5,000mAh battery and 200MP main camera. Samsung also increased its graphite heat-dissipation volume by about 7%.

The Galaxy Fold journey therefore shows how small engineering changes can reshape an entire device. Samsung reduced weight while expanding batteries, cameras, cooling, and foldable functionality.
