OpenAI is losing ground to Anthropic in 2026 as ChatGPT growth slows and business AI becomes more important. The shift has emerged across the US AI market, where companies increasingly seek useful coding tools. Anthropic gained ground by focusing on developers and businesses, while OpenAI spent more time building consumer products and side projects.
The biggest change came from AI coding, where Anthropic’s Claude Code gained strong interest from developers and enterprise customers. OpenAI’s Codex struggled to match Claude Code on speed and ease of use, giving Anthropic an important advantage. Google also increased pressure on OpenAI with its growing Gemini platform, making the AI race more competitive.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has admitted that the company faced a difficult year while promising stronger products ahead. In a July 16 post on his official X account, Altman wrote, “We did not have our best last 12 months ever, which is mostly my fault, but we are about to have our best 12 months to date.”
OpenAI is now changing its strategy by giving more attention to AI coding and enterprise AI products. The company wants Codex and other business tools to bring stronger growth and attract more paying customers.
Leadership changes have added pressure as OpenAI reorganizes responsibilities among senior executives. Fidji Simo’s departure also changed expectations around the company’s leadership structure.
OpenAI still has ChatGPT’s huge user base and a strong position in the AI market. The next challenge involves turning that reach into steady business growth while closing Anthropic’s lead in coding.
The AI race has entered a new phase where practical tools matter as much as powerful models. OpenAI’s comeback will depend on how quickly it can turn its renewed focus into products businesses actually want.
