Google’s new Gmail summary card updates automatically when new messages are added to the thread

Written By : Pradeep Sharma

Key Takeaways

  • Gmail now auto-summarizes long email threads using Gemini AI for quicker insights.

  • The new feature is available on mobile for Google Workspace users in English.

  • Summaries update in real-time and can be managed through smart features settings.

Google has introduced a helpful new feature in Gmail for Google Workspace users. The feature is designed to automatically summarize long email threads. This means users no longer need to scroll through long conversations to understand what's going on. Instead, Gmail will now show a summary of the thread at the top, highlighting the main points of the conversation.

This new function is powered by Gemini, Google’s advanced artificial intelligence system. It is part of Google’s ongoing effort to make communication tools smarter and more efficient using AI.

What Has Changed?

Earlier, Gmail users could only get a summary by tapping on a button that said “Summarize this email.” Now, the process has become automatic. Whenever Gmail detects a long or complex email thread on mobile devices, it will generate a summary card at the top of the conversation. This summary gives a quick overview of the entire email exchange.

The summary card updates automatically when new messages are added to the thread. This means users always have the latest information at a glance.

Where and When Is This Available?

The automatic summarization feature started rolling out on May 29, 2025. However, it is not available to everyone right away. Google is releasing it gradually over about two weeks.

Here are the key details:

Platform: The feature is currently available only on the Gmail mobile app (Android and iOS). It is not yet available on desktop.

Language: It only works with emails written in English.

User Access: Only Google Workspace users can use this feature. This includes users with Business, Enterprise, and Google One AI Premium accounts. Regular Gmail users with free personal accounts do not have access to it yet.

How the Feature Works

Once the feature is active, opening a long email thread in the Gmail mobile app will display a summary box at the top. This summary contains important information from the entire email chain. It may include:

Key decisions made in the conversation

Important dates or deadlines

Who said what

Replies from different people

If Gmail does not automatically generate a summary for a thread, the option to manually request a summary remains. Users can tap “Summarize this email” to generate one when needed.

Benefits of the Update

Saves Time

One of the biggest benefits is saving time. Instead of reading through every message in a long thread, users can get the main idea in just a few seconds. This is especially helpful for professionals who receive many emails every day.

Keeps Users Updated

The summaries update automatically when new emails are received. This ensures users stay updated with the latest developments in the conversation without having to reread everything.

Reduces Email Fatigue

Many users feel overwhelmed by long email chains. This feature helps by breaking down the information into smaller, manageable pieces, reducing the stress of keeping up with multiple conversations.

How to Use the Feature

For Workspace Users

To use this feature, the Gmail app on a mobile device must be updated to the latest version. Also, the Gmail account must be part of a supported Google Workspace plan.

Make sure that smart features and personalization settings are turned on in Gmail settings. This allows Gmail to use AI to enhance the user experience.

For Admins

Admins managing Google Workspace accounts can control whether this feature is available to users. They can enable or disable it through the Google Admin console.

How to Turn It Off

Some users may prefer not to use the auto-summarize feature. It is possible to turn it off. To do this:

Open Gmail settings on the mobile app.

Go to the settings for the Gmail account.

Turn off “Smart features and personalization.”

Once this is done, Gmail will stop showing AI-powered summaries and suggestions. Other smart tools like smart replies and auto-scheduling will also be turned off.

Accuracy and Limitations

Generally Reliable, but Not Perfect

While the summaries are usually helpful, there can be mistakes. Sometimes the AI may get the facts slightly wrong or miss an important detail. For example, it might misinterpret a date or summarize a message incorrectly. That’s why it’s always a good idea to double-check important information in the original emails.

Limited Availability

Right now, the feature is limited in several ways:

It works only on mobile devices.

Only supports English emails.

Available only for paid Google Workspace accounts.

There is no support yet for desktop Gmail users or personal Gmail accounts.

Part of a Bigger AI Push

The auto-summarize feature is just one part of Google’s larger plan to include artificial intelligence in all its apps. The AI system, called Gemini, is being added to many other tools, like:

Google Docs

Google Meet

Google Sheets

Google Chat

Google Drive

With Gemini, users will soon be able to get smart suggestions, instant summaries, help with writing, and even auto-generated content in various formats. Google has shared that it expects Gemini to provide more than 2 billion AI-assisted actions every month across its apps.

What to Expect in the Future

Google is likely to continue improving the summarization feature. Some expected updates include:

Support for more languages

Desktop availability

Integration with personal Gmail accounts

More advanced summaries with action items and suggestions

Google is also working on other AI-powered tools like inbox clean-up, smart replies, and meeting assistance, which may all work together with the summarization feature.

Final Thoughts

The new auto-summarize feature in Gmail is a step forward in making email communication faster and easier. With long threads being a daily challenge for professionals, this smart tool helps by offering quick highlights at the top of the thread. While it is still limited in availability and sometimes imperfect, the feature adds real value for users handling large volumes of email.

As Google continues to expand its AI tools, this update sets the stage for even more intelligent and helpful experiences across all of Google Workspace.
