Artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic is reportedly planning on the largest private funding round in the history of technology as it looks for fresh capital to expand its AI infrastructure and consolidate its lead in the generative AI race.
According to the Financial Times, Claude developer is considering a funding round to raise $50 billion which could value the company at around $1 trillion. Anthropic's valuation talks are at an early stage and no offers have been finalized, Bloomberg separately reported that the valuation could go over $900 billion.
The proposed fundraising would represent a sharp jump from its $380 billion valuation reported at the start of the year, and could make the company the most valuable AI startup in the world.
The report suggests several major investment firms have expressed their interest in the financing round, including General Catalyst, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Dragoneer Investment Group.
Anthropic's revenue growth is also rapid, with annualized growth rates of over 200%. According to reports, revenue is projected to reach moare than $45 billion soon, compared to $9 billion at the end of last year, which reflects nearly 5 times the growth in a few months.
The majority of Anthropic’s capital requirements are for computing infrastructure unlike traditional technology fundraising rounds focused mainly on operational expansion.
Large language models (LLMs) demand vast quantities of GPUs and cloud resources for training and deployment, making compute access one of the most essential competitive advantages in AI development.
Anthropic has already landed long-term infrastructure deals with Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Broadcom for more access to powerful computing resources.
According to Bloomberg, Google has already invested around $10 billion, with options for an additional $30 billion investment, while Amazon has pledged around $5 billion.
