FTSE 100 Opens 23.93 Points Higher as Melrose Surges 8.4% and Investors Balance Risk Appetite With US-Iran Tensions

The FTSE 100 opened 23.93 points higher at 10,878. 25 amid a rally in Bitcoin to three-month highs, underscoring a broader appetite for risk, even as US-Iran tensions escalated. Brent crude futures fell 1.72% to $92.77 per barrel. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) advanced 2.10% to $85.23 per barrel.

Gainers & Losers

On the upside, Melrose Industries climbed 8.40% to 500.80p. Next advanced 1.70% to 15,535p, while Legal & General Group gained 1.56% to 292.70p. Persimmon rose 1.38% to 1,176.50p, Rolls-Royce Holdings added 1.36% to 1,520.60p, and Halma increased 1.29% to 3,600p.

On the downside, Endeavour Mining fell 1.32% to 4,710p. London Stock Exchange Group declined 1.06% to 8,746p, while Fresnillo dropped 0.91% to 3,171p. Unilever slipped 0.75% to 4,746.50p, 3i Group lost 0.68% to 2,914p, and Coca-Cola HBC edged 0.61% lower to 4,588p.

Melrose Industries Shares Rise

Shares in Melrose Industries climbed on Tuesday after the aerospace and automotive group provided an update on the incident at its GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove, California.

In a statement, Melrose announced three key developments.  First, it will launch a claims programme of up to $100 million to compensate eligible residents and businesses affected. 

Second, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office has closed its criminal investigation into the incident and confirmed it will not pursue any criminal charges. Third, GKN Aerospace is now targeting 28 September 2026 to resume full manufacturing operations.

EasyJet Pushes Takeover Date

EasyJet and Apollo have reached an agreement to push back the deadline for the investment firm’s takeover of the airline.

The boards of both groups have agreed to extend the deadline for publishing the Scheme Document, which sets out the terms of the acquisition, to 15 October 2026, to allow ‘continuing constructive engagement with the relevant aviation regulators’ following the summer season.

Chesnara’s Profit Rises

Pension consolidator Chesnara returned to profit following its takeover of HSBC Life UK.

The firm recorded a  GBP 61 million pre-tax profit in the first half of 2026, bouncing back from a  GBP 5 million loss in the same period last year.

Revenue soared to  GBP 255.9 million, up from  GBP 136 million, after the group’s total assets increased after the integration of the HSBC portfolio.

Global Market View

In the US, the S&P 500 fell 0.28% and the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.76%, while the Dow Jones gained 0.26%. NVIDIA dropped 2.91% ahead of its quarterly results on Wednesday.

In Asia on Tuesday, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 gained 0.5% to 65,856.43, while China’s Shanghai Composite rose 0.19%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 0.021%, and South Korea’s Kospi advanced 0.68%. In India, both the Nifty 50 and the Sensex fell by 0.25% and 0.20%, respectively.
