How Solana Is Building a DePIN Ecosystem Beyond Crypto Trading With Helium, Hivemapper and Nosana

Solana is increasingly being used for something very different from token trading: coordinating physical infrastructure.

Decentralized physical infrastructure networks, commonly called DePIN, use blockchain incentives to encourage individuals or businesses to deploy real-world resources such as wireless hotspots, mapping cameras and computing hardware. Solana’s low transaction costs and high throughput have made it a base layer for several of the sector’s largest networks.

Helium provides the clearest example of how this model can move from crypto incentives toward measurable real-world demand.

Helium is Carrying Real Telecom Traffic

Helium migrated its blockchain operations to Solana and now uses community-deployed wireless infrastructure to serve telecom users.

The network reached about 3.4 million daily active users in Q1 2026, up from 1.4 million in Q2 2025. Daily carrier data increased from roughly 24 terabytes in June 2025 to around 128 terabytes by May 2026, a more than fivefold increase.

Helium says its network includes more than 140,000 community-deployed hotspots in its latest infrastructure snapshot, while another consumer-facing dashboard counts more than 358,000 active mobile and Internet of Things hotspots.

The economic model connects usage with HNT. Network users purchase dollar-denominated Data Credits by burning HNT, linking real wireless demand to the token system.

Carrier Offload is Becoming a Commercial Use Case

Solana’s July ecosystem report showed Helium carrier offload operating at almost 2,500 restaurant locations across 34 US brands. Those locations transferred more than 274,000 gigabytes of mobile data during one month.

In Redondo Beach, California, Helium infrastructure is serving more than 2,000 daily users in an area where conventional cellular coverage had been weak.

These examples matter as they show DePIN networks being paid for actual infrastructure usage rather than only issuing token rewards.

Mapping and Computing Extend the Model

Hivemapper applies a similar structure to street-level mapping. Contributors collect fresh road imagery and earn HONEY tokens, creating a decentralized alternative to centrally operated mapping fleets.

Distributed computing projects such as Nosana are also using Solana-based incentives to coordinate graphics processing unit resources. Solana recently highlighted infrastructure that uses Nosana’s distributed GPU network to run artificial intelligence workloads.

DePIN Gives Solana a Different Growth Path

DePIN expands Solana’s addressable market beyond decentralized exchanges, memecoins and speculation.

The real test is whether networks generate enough paying demand to support contributors without relying excessively on token emissions.

If wireless, mapping and computing applications continue scaling, Solana could increasingly become the accounting and incentive layer underneath physical infrastructure that users interact with without ever knowing blockchain is involved.
