How to Track Your Brand in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Written By : Arundhati Kumar

Search is changing quickly. For years, businesses focused on traditional rankings: which position a page holds, how much traffic a keyword generates, and whether a website appears on the first page of Google. Those measurements are still useful, but Google's newer AI features are changing how people discover information and decide which brands to visit.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode can place an AI-generated answer directly in the search experience. Instead of simply scanning a list of blue links, users may first see a summary that brings together information from multiple sources. This creates a new visibility challenge for brands: appearing in traditional search results is no longer the only way to be seen.

What Are Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Google AI Overviews provide AI-generated summaries for certain searches. The answer can appear above the traditional organic results and may include links or citations to websites that Google used as sources.

AI Mode takes the conversational approach further. Instead of relying only on a conventional results page, users can interact with Google's AI to explore a topic through follow-up questions and more detailed responses.

For brands, this changes the path between a search and a website visit. A person may discover a company because it was mentioned or cited in an AI answer before ever looking at the standard organic listings.

This does not mean traditional SEO has become irrelevant. It means search visibility now has another layer that businesses need to understand.

Why Traditional Rank Tracking Is Not Enough

Classic rank tracking is designed to answer a straightforward question: where does your website rank for a particular keyword?

That remains important, but it does not tell the whole story when AI answers appear.

An AI Overview can cite several sources and mention brands within the answer itself. A company might therefore gain visibility because it is cited or named in an AI response, even if that visibility is not reflected in a conventional ranking report.

The opposite can also happen. A website may rank well organically but not appear as a cited source in the AI answer. In that situation, a traditional ranking report can make visibility look stronger than it actually is within the newer search experience.

This is why brands need to monitor not only rankings, but also what happens inside Google's AI-generated results.

What Should You Track?

A useful AI visibility tracking process should focus on several questions.

Does an AI answer appear for your keywords?

Not every search produces an AI Overview or AI Mode response. Tracking when these features appear helps you understand which parts of your keyword set are being affected.

Is your website cited?

If Google uses your website as a source, that can create an additional opportunity for users to discover your brand. Track which queries generate citations and which pages are being referenced.

Which competitors are mentioned?

AI answers may name or cite competitors alongside your brand—or instead of it. Monitoring those mentions can reveal which businesses are gaining visibility in your topic area.

How does visibility change over time?

AI search results can change. A citation that appears today may not appear in the same way later. Tracking these changes over time helps you identify whether your visibility is becoming stronger, weaker, or remaining consistent.

Together, these measurements provide a more complete picture than traditional keyword positions alone.

AI Search Can Put Brands and Sources Front and Center

One of the biggest differences between traditional search and AI search is how information is presented.

In a conventional results page, users generally see a list of pages and decide which result to open. With an AI answer, Google can summarize information first and identify sources within that response.

That means the source selected by the AI can receive valuable attention even when the user does not immediately click through to a traditional organic result.

It also means that brand mentions can matter. If a user asks a question about a product, service, or industry, being included in the AI-generated answer can put your company directly in front of that user during the research process.

For marketers, the goal is therefore not simply to ask, “Where do we rank?” It is also to ask, “Where does Google mention or cite us when users search for our topics?”

Social Networks Can Be Important Sources Too

AI answers do not rely exclusively on traditional business websites. Mencoro's study of AI answers in Spain found that Google leans heavily on social networks when generating AI answers.

One particularly notable finding was that 97.6% of Instagram citations came from AI Overviews and AI Mode.

This illustrates why AI visibility can be broader than conventional website rankings. A brand's presence in search may involve not only its own website, but also the wider online sources that Google uses when constructing AI answers.

For businesses, this makes it useful to monitor the actual sources appearing in AI responses rather than assuming that traditional search rankings tell the complete story.

How to Build a Practical Tracking Process

Start with the keywords that matter most to your business. These might include searches for your products, services, brand name, important industry questions, and comparison searches involving competitors.

Then monitor those searches for changes in AI visibility.

Look for four basic signals:

  • Whether an AI Overview or AI Mode answer appears

  • Whether your website is cited

  • Which competitors or brands are mentioned

  • How those results change over time

The objective is not to replace traditional SEO reporting. Instead, AI visibility should become another layer of your search performance data.

Over time, patterns can become easier to identify. You may discover that your brand is frequently cited for certain topics but rarely appears for others. You may also see competitors gaining mentions in areas where your website previously had strong organic visibility.

Use a Google AI Overview Tracker

Manually checking large keyword sets can quickly become difficult, especially when you want to compare results over time. A dedicated tracking system can make this process more practical by helping you monitor AI search visibility across your important queries.

For businesses that want to understand whether their website is appearing in Google's AI-generated search experience, a Google AI Overview tracker can help organize this information in one place.

The important shift is to think beyond traditional rankings. AI Overviews and AI Mode introduce new ways for users to encounter brands, sources, and competitors. Tracking those appearances gives businesses a clearer picture of how their search visibility is changing as Google continues to evolve the search experience.
