Overview:

  • The documentary examines Thomas Randolph’s marriages, suspicious deaths and complicated legal history through investigative reporting and archival footage.

  • Dan Slepian provides the central perspective, offering unusual access to Randolph throughout the investigation and legal proceedings.

  • The film remains efficient and informative, though its compressed investigative details limit its emotional and cinematic impact.

‘The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part’ revisits the disturbing case of Thomas Randolph, a man whose six marriages, multiple suspicious deaths and long-running legal battles eventually drew the attention of journalist Dan Slepian and Las Vegas detective Dean O’Kelley.

Directed by Chris Smith, the 91- minute documentary uses years of reporting, interviews, police material and archival footage to reconstruct a case that grew increasingly complicated over time.

A Case That Keeps Getting Bigger

The documentary’s strongest quality is the way it gradually expands the story. What initially appears to be an investigation into the 2008 killing of Randolph’s sixth wife, Sharon Causse, soon becomes a much wider examination of his previous relationships and the suspicious circumstances surrounding several of his former wives.

Rather than replying heavily on dramatic recreations, Smith allows the evidence, interviews, and archival material to carry the narrative. This gives the film a journalistic quality that separates it from more sensational true-crime productions. TIME notes that Slepian and O’Kelley’s investigation eventually stretched across years and multiple states as they uncovered more about Randolph’s past.

Dan Slepian Becomes The Film’s Anchor

The involvement of Slepian creates the most unique aspect of the documentary. He did not just conduct an investigation of Randolph from a distance; he was able to keep a relationship with him over time, including during the investigation and even through the process of being imprisoned.

This relationship creates some of the most uncomfortable scenes in the documentary as well. Randolph constantly portrays himself as sure and ready to talk, despite more and more disturbing information coming out through the investigation.

Decider also notes that the access is unique and emphasizes that the involvement of the journalist is what creates credibility in the documentary without turning it into a piece of sensationalist work.

Effective, but not Always Emotionally Powerful

The documentary moves efficiently through a complicated chronology, and its 91-minute runtime prevents the story from becoming unnecessarily stretched. However, that efficiency is also one of its limitations.

There are so many marriages, investigations, testimonies, and legal procedures that some of them get only minimal attention. The investigation, especially, deserved a more detailed description. The film becomes most interesting when recording Slepian’s affair with Randolph, but the investigation itself at times looks rather rushed.

Therefore, ‘The Widower’ proves to be an informative but not entirely immersive film. It tells a shocking story convincingly but may sometimes be more reminiscent of an excellent investigative report than a documentary film.

Final Verdict

‘The Widower: ’Til Death Do Us Part’ is a tightly constructed true-crime documentary that benefits considerably from extraordinary access to its central subject and the journalists and investigators who pursued the case. The strength of the film lies in the fact that it has an actual database of interactions, allowing the personality and changing environment of Randolph to be brought out without too much dramatization.

This film could have taken more time on the evidentiary aspects of the case as well as the experiences of the victims, but the focused nature of the film makes it easy to understand this rather complex case. This film is definitely recommended for people who like true crime documentaries and investigative journalism.
