The battlefield is experiencing a major shift with the rise of cheap, mass-produced drones that challenge expensive military platforms. This transformation is evident in conflicts like Russia-Ukraine and tensions in West Asia, where unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are reshaping military strategies, budgets, and national security. As countries compete to develop indigenous drone technologies, understanding this change is crucial for policymakers, businesses, and defense observers.
In this episode of the Analytics Insight Podcast, host Priya Dialani speaks with Sai Pattabhiram, Founder and Managing Director of Zuppa Geo Navigation Technologies, about how drones are reshaping modern warfare and defence economics.
The discussion explores the growing role of unmanned aerial vehicles in global conflicts, India's push for indigenous drone technology, AI-driven autonomy, cost asymmetry in warfare, and the strategic importance of building a resilient domestic drone ecosystem. Here are the key excerpts from the interview.
The development of drones has revolutionized warfare because of the low cost and relatively easy access they offer to modern military capabilities that would otherwise cost much more. A mere $ 3,000 drone can threaten tanks, missiles, or even air defense systems, which are worth millions of dollars.
From the above conflict, it has been seen that many cheap drones can make an impact on the long-drawn battle. It has now been realized by the countries that mass-production capabilities along with innovations and upgrades are equally important as sophisticated weapons.
Indian defense relies greatly on imported drone parts, which causes worries about the logistics and cybersecurity of such operations. Creating home-grown technologies improves the country’s national security by making it less dependent on others and allows it to position itself as a potential partner in defense manufacturing for other nations.
Through artificial intelligence, the drones will be able to fly on their own, locate targets, function without the aid of GPS and coordinate in swarms. The autonomous drones that have been brought about through artificial intelligence help in increasing efficiency and reducing human labor requirements.
Future wars are predicted to last for a longer duration, become technologically sophisticated, and occur from afar. The use of drones gives states the ability to attack without employing substantial forces on the ground. In addition, they enhance defensive capacity. With advances in technology, future wars will be won through technological superiority.
