iPhone 18 Pro vs Laptops: Pocket-Sized Power!: Can a smartphone outperform a laptop? Early benchmarks suggest Apple's iPhone 18 Pro and its A20 Pro chip can beat some older computers in selected tests. The result is impressive, but performance depends on the task, cooling, and the laptop you compare it to.
The A20 Pro Chip: Apple's A20 Pro uses a 2-nanometre manufacturing process and a six-core CPU design. Apple says its new performance cores deliver up to 20% faster CPU performance than the previous generation. These improvements help explain the phone's strong early benchmark results.
Impressive Single-Core Speed: Early benchmark comparisons suggest the A20 Pro can outperform an M4 Mac in single-core tasks. This matters for workloads that depend heavily on one processing core. However, single-core results alone do not determine how quickly a computer handles every application.
Multi-Core Performance Has Limits: A laptop or desktop chip can still have an advantage in heavily parallel workloads. The M4 has more CPU cores than the A20 Pro, which can help with demanding tasks that use many cores simultaneously. Results vary with the software and benchmark.
Graphics Power in a Phone: Apple says the A20 Pro's redesigned seven-core GPU delivers up to 40% faster graphics performance than its predecessor. That makes the iPhone more capable for gaming and graphics-intensive mobile apps. It does not mean every laptop GPU will be slower.
Built for On-Device AI: The A20 Pro includes neural accelerators designed to support on-device AI processing. This can help compatible tasks run locally without always relying on cloud services. Actual AI performance depends on the model, memory, software and task being executed
Heat and Sustained Performance: Laptops usually have more room for cooling systems than smartphones. During long, demanding workloads, a phone may reduce performance as temperatures rise. Short benchmark bursts therefore cannot fully predict performance during extended video editing, gaming or professional computing sessions.
