RAM and storage are becoming major cost drivers for gadgets in 2026. AI data centres need huge amounts of memory, pushing chip makers to prioritise higher-margin AI products. Less capacity remains for phones, laptops and other consumer devices, putting pressure on gadget prices.
The memory shortage is already pushing prices higher. TrendForce expects conventional DRAM prices to rise 13–18% in Q3 2026, while NAND Flash prices could increase 10–15%. Mobile DRAM prices are also expected to rise around 8–13% during the quarter.
AI is at the centre of the problem. Samsung, SK hynix and Micron are shifting more production towards high-bandwidth memory and server products used in AI infrastructure. This leaves less supply for the standard memory used in smartphones, PCs and consumer electronics.
Higher memory costs eventually reach buyers. In India, smartphone prices have already increased across several models, while shipments have declined as consumers delay upgrades. The pressure is strongest in affordable phones, where even a small component-cost increase can affect the final price.
Brands have another option besides raising prices: cutting specifications. A phone or laptop may retain a similar price while offering less RAM, lower storage or fewer configuration choices. This “shrinkflation” can make newer gadgets look affordable while quietly reducing their value.
Storage upgrades can also become expensive. Manufacturers often charge a large premium for higher-capacity versions, while external SSDs, memory cards or cloud storage can sometimes provide cheaper alternatives. Checking the actual storage requirement before buying can help avoid unnecessary upgrade costs.
For buyers, RAM deserves special attention because it directly affects multitasking and long-term usability. With memory prices still under pressure, choosing a device with enough RAM and storage at purchase can be smarter than focusing only on the newest processor or camera.
