Valve’s Unusual Beginning – Founded in 1996 by former Microsoft employees Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington, Valve initially set out to make Half-Life using the Quake engine. The project was later rebuilt after an internal review found the original game wasn’t good enough to release.

Half-Life Changed Storytelling – Released in 1998, Half-Life became a landmark first-person shooter by blending combat, storytelling and immersive level design. Valve’s decision to keep players inside Gordon Freeman’s perspective helped make the campaign feel like one continuous experience.

Steam Started as a Risky Idea – Valve launched Steam in 2003, initially facing skepticism from PC gamers. Half-Life 2 later became one of the first major games requiring Steam, helping transform the platform from an experiment into PC gaming’s dominant digital marketplace.

Half-Life 2 Had a Nightmare Before Launch – Half-Life 2 was delayed and famously leaked online in 2003 before its eventual release. Despite the setback, Valve pushed forward, and the game arrived in 2004 with physics, storytelling and technology that influenced the next generation of shooters.

The Orange Box Was a Company Hack – Valve bundled Half-Life 2, two episodes, Team Fortress 2 and Portal into The Orange Box. Internally, teams could move between projects when another needed help, turning collaboration into a practical production strategy.

Valve Took a Different View of Piracy – Gabe Newell argued that better service could beat piracy more effectively than aggressive DRM. Valve focused on convenience, updates, multiplayer, localization and other features, using Steam to make legitimate purchases more attractive.

Steam Became More Than a Store – Over three decades, Valve expanded Steam into a broader gaming ecosystem while experimenting with hardware, Linux support and the Steam Deck. Its influence now reaches game distribution, development tools and how millions of players access PC games.
