The #PSBlackout campaign began on August 23 and asks users to avoid playing, logging into PSN, buying games, or spending on PlayStation services until August 30.
Players Push for an Indefinite Boycott: The protest is now becoming more serious, with some supporters calling for the boycott to continue indefinitely until Sony changes its decision. The campaign was organized by Does It Play?, a group focused on game preservation and testing games without an internet connection.
Sony Plans to End New Game Discs: Sony announced that physical game disc production for all new PlayStation games will stop from January 2028. Future releases will instead be sold digitally through the PlayStation Store and at retailers using digital formats. Games already released or planned for disc before 2028 will not be affected.
Ownership is A Major Concern: Many players say physical games offer a stronger sense of ownership. Discs can be resold, traded, lent, collected, and preserved. Players fear digital-only releases could make access dependent on Sony’s services, especially if games are later removed from online stores or become unavailable.
Retailers And Jobs Could Also Suffer: The backlash is not limited to gamers. Retailers and physical game sellers argue that moving completely to digital could hurt distributors, warehouses, logistics companies, trade-in businesses, collectors, and other parts of the physical gaming market. The petition against Sony’s plan has already attracted hundreds of thousands of signatures.
Sony Says Digital Gaming is The Future: Sony has defended its decision by pointing to changing consumer habits. The company says digital game sales now greatly exceed physical purchases, making the move a natural response to market trends. Sony’s CFO has also indicated that the company intends to continue with the 2028 plan despite the backlash.
The Fight Could Continue Beyond August: The current blackout is scheduled to run through August 30, but calls for an indefinite boycott could keep the issue alive.
