iPad Mini 8 Is Nearing Launch
Apple is reportedly close to launching the next-generation iPad mini, the successor to the iPad mini 7 released more than 21 months ago. The new model could bring major upgrades across performance, display technology, durability and pricing, making it one of Apple's most significant iPad mini updates in years.
A19 Pro Chip Could Power It
The iPad mini 8 could feature Apple's A19 Pro chip, according to code accidentally shared by Apple in August. The chip uses an upgraded third-generation 3-nanometer process and includes a 16-core Neural Engine. Its upgraded GPU architecture could deliver three times the peak GPU compute of the previous generation.
OLED Display Could Be The Biggest Upgrade
Apple is widely expected to replace the iPad mini 7's LCD panel with OLED technology. Reports also suggest the screen could grow from 8.3 inches to 8.7 inches. OLED could deliver deeper blacks, stronger contrast, improved response times, better viewing angles and greater design flexibility compared with traditional LCD technology.
120Hz Display Still Remains Uncertain
The current iPad mini 7 uses a 60Hz LCD display, while the next model could receive a higher refresh rate. Reports suggest 120Hz ProMotion could arrive with the OLED panel, although this remains uncertain. The display could also use a single-stack LTPS OLED panel rather than the iPad Pro's dual-stack LTPO technology.
Water Resistance Could Change The Design
Apple could make the iPad mini 8 more water-resistant by redesigning its speaker system. Reports suggest a vibration-based system could eliminate traditional speaker holes, reducing openings where water and dust could enter. Current iPad mini models lack an official IP rating, while the new model could introduce certified water protection.
Late October Launch Expected
Reports from ETNews and ZDNET Korea pointed towards an OLED iPad mini update in 2026. ETNews also reported that mass production was underway at a Samsung factory. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman later said Apple planned to release the OLED iPad mini by late October this year.
Price Could Rise Further
The current iPad mini 7 starts at $599 for the 128GB Wi-Fi-only model after Apple raised its price by $100 from $499. Rising memory and storage costs linked to AI data-center demand contributed to price increases. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggested Apple could charge up to $100 more for the next iPad mini.
