How to Use Gmail Confidential Mode: Step-by-Step Guide

Simran Mishra

Open Gmail and Compose Email: On desktop or mobile, log in to Gmail and click “Compose” to start a new email. Confidential Mode works for both email text and attachments, ensuring secure sharing.

Enable Confidential Mode: Click the padlock-clock icon at the bottom of the compose window on desktop. On mobile, tap the three-dot menu, select Confidential Mode, and toggle it on to secure your email.

Set Expiration Date: Choose an expiration period for your email, ranging from 1 day up to 5 years. This automatically limits access to sensitive content, reducing the risk of data leaks over time.

Choose Passcode Options: Decide between “No SMS passcode” for Gmail recipients or “SMS passcode” for non-Gmail users. SMS sends a one-time code to the recipient’s phone for added email security.

Save Settings and Send: Click “Save” to apply your confidential settings. Complete your email by adding recipients, subject, and message. Click “Send” to ensure the email follows restricted access rules.

Manage Sent Emails: Go to your Sent folder to view confidential emails. You can revoke recipient access anytime before the expiration date, giving you full control over who can view your sensitive messages.

Recipient Restrictions and Notes: Recipients cannot forward, copy, print, or download emails or attachments. Screenshots aren’t blocked, and SMS passcodes work in supported countries, ensuring controlled secure access.
