How to Start Spotify Jam: Step-by-Step Guide

Antara

Check App Compatibility and Update Spotify: Before starting a Spotify Jam, make sure the app is up to date on iOS or Android. Older versions may not support the feature. Head to the App Store or Google Play Store, check for updates, and install if needed. Having an updated app ensures smooth performance, access to new features, and improved connectivity, which is essential for collaborative playlist sessions with friends.

Open Spotify and Choose a Song or Playlist: Open your Spotify app and browse through your liked songs, playlists, or suggested music. Select a song, album, or playlist you want to start sharing. Since Spotify Jam is designed for shared listening, choose something everyone may enjoy. Picking the right starting track sets the tone and keeps participants excited as they begin adding their favorites to the session.

Tap the Spotify Jam Button: Once the song starts playing, tap the Connect or Spotify Jam icon available near the device selection area. This creates a Jam session that others can join. Spotify may prompt permission requests if you are using it for the first time. Once activated, the feature allows real-time changes and track additions from everyone in the group.

Invite Friends to Join the Jam: Spotify offers several ways to invite people: scanning a QR code, sharing via Bluetooth, using Nearby Sharing, or sending the Jam link. Ensure everyone is close enough if using proximity-based access. If you're hosting a house party, the QR code method works great because participants can join instantly. Sharing the link works for remote listening and virtual meetups.

Manage Permissions and Controls: As the host, you can control who can add or skip tracks. Spotify lets you enable or disable permissions such as track voting, queue additions, and moderation options. This is especially useful if you want a controlled experience or prefer open collaboration. Managing access ensures the listening experience stays enjoyable and avoids unwanted skips or song spam.

Customize the Jam Experience: Let everyone contribute by adding songs that match the vibe, party, study, gym, or chill mood. Encourage participants to explore recommendations, trending tracks, or personalized mixes. Spotify’s AI suggestions also help find matching songs. The more varied the contributions, the better the Jam evolves. This feature creates a shared music experience that reflects everyone’s tastes.

End or Save the Jam for Later: When you're done, simply tap End Session to close the Jam. If you want to revisit the playlist, save it as a collaborative or private playlist. This helps you remember the music vibe from events, parties, or hangouts. Saving the Jam ensures your favorite shared tracks can be enjoyed again anytime without restarting the process.
