How to Remove Your Personal Info From Google Search: Step-by-Step Guide

Understand What Google Can Remove

Google allows users to request the removal of sensitive personal information from search results, including phone numbers, home addresses, email addresses, government ID numbers, banking details, login credentials, and certain explicit images shared without consent. However, removing information from Google Search does not delete it from the original website. The content may still exist online unless the site owner removes it as well.

Use Google’s “Results About You” Tool

Google’s updated “Results About You” feature helps users monitor and remove personal information appearing in search results. Open your Google account settings, go to the privacy section, and access the tool. Add details such as your name, phone number, email address, or home address. Google will automatically scan search results and notify you when matching information appears online.

Request Removal Directly From Search Results

Google now makes removal requests easier directly from search pages. Search your name or personal details, click the three-dot menu beside a result, and select the option related to personal information removal. Follow the prompts and submit the request for review. Google may remove results containing sensitive data if they violate privacy policies.

Remove Government IDs and Sensitive Documents

Recent updates allow users to request removal of government-issued identification details like passport numbers, driver’s licenses, tax IDs, and Social Security numbers. These highly sensitive details are now included in Google’s expanded privacy protection tools to help reduce identity theft risks.

Contact the Website Owner for Permanent Removal

Removing search results alone is not always enough because the original page may still exist online. Contact the website owner and request deletion of the content directly from the source. Once the page is removed, Google will usually stop indexing it automatically. This is the most effective way to permanently erase personal information from public access.

Use Google’s Outdated Content Removal Tool

If a website already deleted your information but Google Search still shows old results, use Google’s outdated content refresh tool. This helps update Google’s search index faster and removes outdated snippets or cached pages that continue appearing in search results. Many users report this method works well for old or inactive pages.

Protect Yourself With Strong Privacy Settings

Prevention is just as important as removal. Regularly review social media privacy settings, avoid posting sensitive details publicly, and enable two-factor authentication on important accounts. Limiting public exposure reduces the chances of personal information being indexed by search engines in the future. Security experts also recommend checking data broker websites that collect personal records and opting out where possible.
