How to Install Steam on Chromebook and Play Your Favorite Games

Antara

Switch to the Beta Channel : Start by moving your Chromebook to the Beta channel via Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details > Change channel > Beta. Updating and restarting will install the necessary features to enable Steam support. This step unlocks experimental features like Borealis, which powers the Steam for ChromeOS experience, vital for installing and running Steam on compatible devices.

Enable Steam Support (Borealis Flag) : Navigate to chrome://flags, find and enable the flag #borealis-enabled. Restart your Chromebook. Borealis is the codename for the Linux-based virtual environment that Steam runs in on ChromeOS, enabling native performance and compatibility for many PC titles. It’s key to turning a standard Chromebook into a gaming-capable device.

Install Steam via Launcher or Crosh : After enabling Borealis, search for Steam in the ChromeOS launcher, follow prompts to download, then sign in. If it doesn’t appear automatically, open the Crosh terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T), type insert_coin, and follow the on-screen instructions to launch the Steam installer.

Check Hardware Requirements and Supported Models : Ensure your Chromebook meets the minimum specs: at least Core i3 or Ryzen 3, 8 GB RAM, and 128 GB storage. For smoother gameplay, Core i5 or Ryzen 5 with 16 GB RAM is recommended. Currently, only about 35 Chromebook models are officially supported, including Acer 514, Asus CX9, HP Dragonfly Pro, Dell 5430, and Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming Chromebook.

Install and Run Games (Linux/Proton Support) : Steam on ChromeOS will show Linux-compatible games by default. For Windows titles, enable Steam Play with Proton Experimental in settings, either globally or per-game via the Compatibility tab. Many popular titles like Portal 2, Dota 2, The Witcher 3, Stardew Valley, and Skyrim can run smoothly under Proton.

Use Controllers and Enhance Gameplay : Pair Bluetooth or USB controllers via Settings >Bluetooth > Pair new device. Then configure them in Steam’s Settings > Controller > General Controller Settings. Checking relevant profiles ensures optimal control. Accessories like Bluetooth controllers enhance gameplay and responsiveness, making gaming on a Chromebook more comfortable and immersive.

Be Aware: Steam Beta Ends Soon : Google has announced that the Steam for Chromebook Beta program will end on January 1, 2026. After that, installed games will no longer be playable through the Beta system. If you plan to game on your Chromebook, be sure to install and enjoy your titles before support ends.
