How to Add a Password Lock to WhatsApp on Windows PC and Mac

Humpy Adepu

Use Built-in System Security Features: On both Windows and Mac, you can protect WhatsApp by locking the entire app using native system features. Windows users can use AppLocker or Windows Hello, while Mac users can create a password-protected user account or use Screen Time app restrictions to block WhatsApp access.

Enable WhatsApp Two-Step Verification: Though it doesn’t lock the desktop app directly, enabling two-step verification adds an extra layer of security. It requires a PIN whenever your WhatsApp account is linked on a new device. This helps prevent unauthorized access, even if someone opens your PC or Mac without permission.

Use Third-Party App Lockers on Windows: Windows users can use reliable third-party apps like Folder Guard or My Lockbox. These allow you to password-protect specific applications or folders, including WhatsApp’s installation directory, ensuring that no one can open WhatsApp without entering the password first.

Use Third-Party App Lockers on Mac: Mac users can use tools like AppCrypt or Cisdem AppCrypt to lock WhatsApp. These apps require a password to launch any selected application, providing strong protection. You can also set time-based access restrictions for added security.

Lock WhatsApp Web with Browser Extensions: If you use WhatsApp Web, you can protect it with browser extensions like “LockPW” for Chrome or “Site Blocker” for Safari. These require a password to open WhatsApp Web or any specific tab, preventing unauthorized access from your PC or Mac browser.

Set Up Automatic Screen Lock: Enable automatic screen locking on both Windows and Mac to secure your entire device. On Windows, use Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. On Mac, go to System Settings > Lock Screen. This ensures WhatsApp becomes inaccessible whenever your computer is idle.

Regularly Update WhatsApp and OS Security: Keeping both WhatsApp and your operating system updated ensures the latest security patches are applied. Updates often fix vulnerabilities that could allow unauthorized access. Combined with password locks and two-factor authentication, this reduces the risk of your WhatsApp account being accessed on a PC or Mac.
