Girish Mathrubootham’s Freshworks: From Chennai Startup to Nasdaq

Girish Mathrubootham: The Founder: Girish Mathrubootham is the co-founder of Freshworks, the software company he started after nearly a decade at Zoho. He left a stable corporate career to build a customer-support product, eventually taking the Chennai-born company to a landmark listing on the Nasdaq exchange.

Freshdesk: The First Product: Freshworks began in 2010 as Freshdesk, a cloud-based customer-support and helpdesk platform. Girish Mathrubootham and co-founder Shan Krishnasamy launched it from a rented meeting room in Chennai, aiming to offer businesses a simpler, more affordable alternative to established enterprise software.

Chennai Roots, Global Ambition: Although Freshdesk was built by a team in Chennai, the company was incorporated in the United States early on to support international billing and payments. This practical decision helped Freshworks sell globally while retaining much of its engineering and operating talent in India.

Freshworks: Beyond Helpdesk: As the company added products for customer engagement, sales, and employee experience, Freshdesk rebranded as Freshworks in 2017. The broader identity reflected its evolution from a single ticketing tool into a multi-product SaaS platform serving businesses across many countries.

Backing From Major Investors: Freshworks attracted funding from prominent investors including Accel, Sequoia, Tiger Global, and Google’s CapitalG. These investments helped the startup scale its products, expand internationally, and compete with much larger global software companies in the customer-experience market.

The Nasdaq IPO Moment: On September 22, 2021, Freshworks listed on Nasdaq under the ticker FRSH. It sold 28.5 million Class A shares at $36 each, raised more than $1 billion, and reached a market capitalisation of about $10.13 billion on its debut.

A Milestone for Indian SaaS: Freshworks became the first India-born SaaS company to trade on a US exchange, a milestone for India’s product-startup ecosystem. The IPO showed that software companies built in India could create global brands, attract worldwide investors, and reach the highest levels of public markets.
