Bluetooth vs Bluetooth LE: Key Differences Explained

Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) are two Bluetooth radio options designed for different jobs. Classic focuses on continuous connections such as music, calls, and data transfer. Bluetooth LE focuses on low-power communication, making it ideal for sensors, trackers, wearables, and smart-home devices.

The biggest difference is power use. Bluetooth Classic is designed for continuous data connections, while Bluetooth LE is built to use very little power. LE devices can send small amounts of data, then remain inactive until needed. This makes BLE useful for devices that need long battery life.

Bluetooth Classic uses 79 channels across the 2.4GHz band, while Bluetooth LE uses 40 channels. Classic can reach data rates of up to 3 Mbps, while LE supports 1 Mbps and 2 Mbps modes. LE Coded PHY can use lower speeds to support longer-range connections.

Bluetooth Classic remains common in wireless headphones, speakers, car entertainment systems, and other products that need continuous audio. Bluetooth LE is widely used in fitness trackers, smartwatches, medical sensors, smart locks, beacons, and IoT devices where small amounts of data need to move efficiently.

Bluetooth LE is no longer limited to simple sensor data. LE Audio brings wireless audio to the Low Energy radio using the LC3 codec and LE Isochronous Channels. It supports features such as multi-stream audio and Auracast broadcast audio for sending one audio stream to multiple compatible receivers.

Many modern devices can support both Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth LE. A smartphone or headset can use Classic for traditional audio while using LE for features such as device control, tracking, or other low-power functions. The exact combination depends on the hardware and supported Bluetooth features.
