Bitcoin’s First Quantum-Safe Transaction
Bitcoin has recorded its first reported quantum-safe transaction on mainnet. StarkWare said the transaction was mined on August 26, 2026, using its Quantum-Safe Bitcoin (QSB) method. The experiment shows that Bitcoin can protect selected coins from future quantum attacks without changing its current consensus rules.
QSB Does Not Need a Soft Fork
One of the biggest points is that QSB works with Bitcoin’s existing rules. The method uses existing Bitcoin Script features to create an additional spending condition. This means the test did not require a soft fork, hard fork, or core protocol upgrade to reach the mainnet.
It Targets the Quantum Threat
Bitcoin currently relies on cryptography that could be attacked by a sufficiently powerful quantum computer using Shor’s algorithm. Such a machine could potentially derive private keys from exposed public keys. QSB instead adds a hash-based security layer designed to resist this future quantum threat.
The Transaction Was Mined on Mainnet
This was more than a paper proposal or testnet experiment. The transaction was confirmed on Bitcoin mainnet in block 964,199 on August 26. MARA mined it after receiving the transaction through its Slipstream service, putting the experiment permanently on Bitcoin’s public ledger.
It Does Not Make All Bitcoin Quantum-Safe
The milestone should not be mistaken for a network-wide security upgrade. QSB protects coins that are deliberately moved into its special spending setup. Bitcoin already sitting in regular addresses does not automatically gain this protection. A broader solution would require wider adoption or a future protocol-level change.
QSB is Still Expensive and Experimental
The method has practical limits today. Research around QSB estimates off-chain computation costs of a few hundred dollars, while the resulting transaction is also non-standard. It may require direct submission to a miner rather than normal mempool propagation, making it unsuitable for everyday Bitcoin users for now.
Why This Milestone Matters
The first mainnet transaction shows that quantum-resistant Bitcoin spending has moved from theory toward a working demonstration. It does not solve Bitcoin’s entire quantum problem, yet it gives developers another path to explore. StarkWare itself continues to argue that a protocol-level upgrade remains the stronger long-term solution.
