Best Legendary Shotguns in Borderlands 4

Antara

Hot Slugger (the high-damage, single-shot slayer): Hot Slugger is often regarded as the top-tier legendary shotgun in Borderlands 4, thanks to its Blazing Barrel perk that grants +30% bonus damage for 10 seconds after a kill, stacking up to three times (+90%). Its reload time is impressively low for a one-shot Jakobs barrel gun, letting you chain critical ricochets continuously. It synergizes especially well with builds that boost critical damage or exploit ricochet mechanics.

Rainbow Vomit (elemental versatility powerhouse): Rainbow Vomit is a legendary shotgun with the Color Spray effect that fires three different elemental droplets simultaneously, making it ideal for generalist builds. You can roll it with varying elements (for instance, corrosive, cryo, radiation), allowing you to counter multiple enemy resistances without weapon swapping. To obtain it, you must defeat Leader Willem (Carcadia Burn) after the quest unlocks, then farm via Moxxi’s Big Encore.

Hellwalker (returning classic with kinetic punch): Hellwalker is a legendary Jakobs shotgun returning from previous games, now dealing kinetic damage instead of fire, which means it is less resisted and more consistent across varied enemy types. Its signature ‘Soothslayer’ effect and pentagon shot pattern deliver heavy burst potential. It can be farmed at the Old Scrape dig site by defeating bosses like Saddleback and Immortal Boneface in the Terminus Range region.

Convergence & Kickballer (crowd control & ricochet options): While Hot Slugger and Rainbow Vomit dominate in many builds, Convergence, Kickballer, and similar legendary shotguns offer unique crowd control or ricochet mechanics. For instance, Kickballer can bounce projectiles wildly across a room, turning environments lethal (though risky to the player). Convergence may exhibit cluster or explosive effects (as per community lists of best shotguns). These guns shine in vast arenas or when you can manipulate bounce patterns in your favor.

Synergy with character builds & skills: A gun’s raw power often depends on how well it synergizes with your Vault Hunter’s skill tree and augment gear. Hot Slugger, for instance, pairs exceptionally well with ricochet or critical damage boosts, while Rainbow Vomit suits elemental-damage trees. Many shotgun builds demand ammo regeneration, reload speed buffs, or bounce enhancements. Players should tailor their skill distribution, enhancements, and gear loadouts to exploit the legendary shotgun’s unique perk (e.g., stacking damage, element spread, bounce) for maximum performance.

Farming difficulty & drop reliability: One of the biggest challenges with legendary shotguns is achieving a consistent drop rate and boss farming efficiency. Hot Slugger is dropped by Callous Harbinger in the Craven’s Nook bunker (requires unlocking the area). Rainbow Vomit comes from Leader Willem after completing quest chains and then respawning him via a Big Encore device. Meanwhile, less popular legendaries, such as Kickballer or Convergence, may have lower target-farm routes or be rarer in world drops. This makes persistence essential.

Choosing ‘best’ depends on playstyle & content: The ‘best’ shotgun is subjective: in boss fights, high single-target damage (Hot Slugger, Hellwalker) often rules, whereas in crowd or resist-diverse zones, versatility (Rainbow Vomit) or bounce mechanics (Kickballer, Convergence) can outshine. Environmental geometry, enemy types (shielded, armored, elemental), and mission layout all influence which legendary you favor. The ideal approach is to collect multiple legendary shotguns and rotate based on situational needs rather than relying on a single ‘best’ pick.
