Boost Your PC Skills: Powerful CMD Commands to Know

Harpreet Singh Kapula

Network Diagnostics – ipconfig, ping, tracert : Use `ipconfig` to view or refresh TCP/IP settings, `ping` to test connectivity, and `tracert` to trace packet paths. These commands help troubleshoot network issues effectively. Combining them can diagnose DNS, latency, or routing problems quickly. Essential for resolving connectivity glitches without needing GUI tools

Active Connections – netstat, nslookup, netsh : `netstat` reveals current network sessions and open ports, while `nslookup` queries DNS mappings. `netsh` allows deep configuration of networking, including resetting interfaces or firewall setups. Together, these tools empower users to monitor connections and make configuration changes with precision

System Overview – systeminfo, winver, tasklist/taskkill : `systeminfo` outputs detailed OS and hardware data; `winver` shows the Windows version. `tasklist` lists running processes, and `taskkill /PID [pid] /F` terminates unresponsive apps. These basic yet powerful commands help you obtain key system info and manage processes efficiently

Disk Management – chkdsk, diskpart, format : Use `chkdsk` to scan and repair disk errors; `diskpart` for partition tasks like `list disk`, `select disk`, and `clean`; and `format` to prepare drives. These commands are critical for maintaining storage health and ensuring proper file system management under Windows

File & Folder Operations – copy, del, robocopy : `copy`, `del`, `rename` help basic file operations; `robocopy` excels in syncing directories and preserving metadata. Automate folder backups or bulk transfers. These commands provide more control than GUI file managers, especially when scripting tasks

Automation & Scripting – batch, piping, environment variables : Batch files automate sequences of commands. Use redirection (`>`), piping (`|`), and environment variables (e.g., `%USERPROFILE%`) to streamline workflows. Wildcards (`*`, `?`) further accelerate file operations. These techniques enhance productivity through repeatable scripts

Advanced Tools & Safety – sfc, shutdown, powercfg : Use `sfc /scannow` to repair system files. `shutdown /s /t` schedules timed shutdowns, and `powercfg /batteryreport` generates power usage reports. These commands help maintain system integrity and manage power or shutdown events intelligently
