Key Takeaways -

  • Dots: OpenAI’s always-on agents can handle goals, use apps, and work through cloud computers with user approval for sensitive actions.

  • GPT-6.1 Sol: The model delivers near-GPT-6 Astra performance for complex tasks at much lower API costs.

  • Agent Tools: Codex Cloud, ChatGPT Space, Agents API, and Ultrafast expand AI support across coding, teamwork, and software workflows.

OpenAI has pushed AI far beyond the usual chatbot model at its latest DevDay. The company revealed more than 20 major products and updates across ChatGPT, Codex, models, APIs, and workplace tools.

The main theme centers on AI agents that can take care of tasks, use software, work across apps, and handle long projects with less direct control from a person. OpenAI says ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion weekly users, which gives these new tools a very large base from day one.

Dots Put AI Agents at the Center

Dots stand out as the biggest DevDay release. OpenAI describes Dots as always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra. Each Dot gets its own cloud computer and browser, plus access to more than 4,000 apps through OpenAI’s plugin ecosystem. A Dot can work toward a goal around the clock, keep context across tasks, and learn from feedback over time.

A Dot can also handle work without a person directing every step. OpenAI gives examples such as a developer who needs customer feedback turned into tested fixes, a product lead who needs launch material updated after a scope change, and a scientist who needs fresh data added to an analysis. A Dot can also prepare an invoice and send it after approval. OpenAI has started its Dot rollout across Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise plans in eligible markets.

Safety remains a major part of the Dot design. Users can set boundaries, review progress, and approve sensitive actions. Each Dot uses its own cloud computer, while a personal computer stays separate unless a user grants access. Dots can also work through ChatGPT, Slack, and Microsoft Teams, which gives them a place inside existing work systems.

GPT-6.1 Sol Brings Lower AI Costs

GPT-6.1 Sol gives developers a cheaper option for complex software work, computer use, and professional tasks. OpenAI says Sol offers near-GPT-6 Astra intelligence at one-fifth the standard input and output token prices of Astra. The standard API rate sits at USD 2 per million input tokens, USD 0.10 per million cached input tokens, and USD 10 per million output tokens.

The model also posts strong results across several tests. On DeepSWE v1.1, GPT-6.1 Sol matches GPT-6 Astra at about one-fifth of the cost. On OSWorld 2.0, Sol comes within 2.1 percentage points of Astra at maximum reasoning effort while costing about one-seventh as much per task. OpenAI also reports a factual error rate of 7.7% at low reasoning effort, down from 11.4% for GPT-6 Sol.

Ultrafast Targets Speed

OpenAI also added Ultrafast, a premium speed tier for GPT-6 Astra. The company reports up to 8× faster token generation in Codex, with speeds of up to 300 tokens per second, and up to 6× faster output through the API. Astra Ultrafast now works through the API and through ChatGPT Work and Codex on Pro 500 and Enterprise plans. GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast will arrive soon.

Codex Moves into the Cloud

Codex now gives developers more ways to handle software tasks away from a local computer. Codex Cloud runs tasks on OpenAI-managed computers, with project repositories, tools, dependencies, and access settings inside a cloud environment. A developer can start or continue a task from desktop, web, or mobile.

OpenAI also added voice control to the Codex CLI, a new Agents view, Code Review tools, and Codex Security Cloud. Security Cloud can scan GitHub repositories, investigate findings, remove duplicates, and prepare fixes while the main computer stays off.

ChatGPT Space Creates a Shared Work Hub

ChatGPT Space brings Pages, files, project context, people, and AI agents into one shared place. Teams can use Space for projects, while Pages can hold editable documents and charts. OpenAI also added collaborative slides, Team Tasks, and ChatGPT access inside Slack and Microsoft Teams. The Meetings plugin can create notes and action items, with a beta available on macOS for Pro and Business users.

New APIs Give Developers More Control

The Decisions API lets developers give Luna a fixed set of questions and predefined answers. The system can classify content, route requests, or select the next action for an agent. OpenAI has placed the feature in limited preview, with a broader release planned soon.

The Agents API also gained computer use. Developers can now create agents that interact with software through an OpenAI-hosted browser. The API adds multi-agent tools, tool search, tool calls, and context compaction, which gives developers a more complete base for complex agent systems.

Pro 500 Raises the Top Tier

OpenAI also launched Pro 500 at USD 500 per month. The plan offers 25 times the Plus usage allowance and access to Astra Ultrafast. Pro 200 subscriptions have also returned, although new Pro 200 accounts have different usage limits from some existing accounts.

The clearest message from DevDay is simple: OpenAI wants AI to handle more than answers. Dots, Codex Cloud, Agents API, ChatGPT Space, and GPT-6.1 Sol all point toward software that can take a goal, use tools, and carry a task much farther before human review enters the process. That shift gives DevDay 2026 a focus on practical AI agents rather than a single new chatbot model.
