Ripple has introduced a multi-phase roadmap to make the XRP Ledger fully post-quantum ready by 2028. The plan starts with testing quantum-resistant cryptography, validator trials, and a hybrid rollout. Ripple said long-term financial infrastructure cannot wait for quantum threats to become immediate before preparing.
First, Ripple placed emergency planning at the front of its roadmap. The company said it wanted a response ready in case classical cryptography breaks faster than expected.
That phase focuses on forced migration into post-quantum secure accounts if a “Q-Day” scenario arrives. Ripple is exploring tools that would help users move funds even in a compromised environment.
One option includes post-quantum zero-knowledge proofs. Ripple said those tools could let users prove ownership of existing keys without exposing the keys.
Ripple also warned about a “harvest now, decrypt later” risk. The company said attackers may collect cryptographic data today and hold it until quantum hardware can decode it.
Next, Ripple said it would begin a formal risk study and testing in early 2026. That phase will examine quantum threats and trial new security tools.
Ripple is working with Project Eleven on validator testing and early custody prototypes. The company said that the partnership should help speed development.
Then, the roadmap moves into hybrid deployment. In that stage, post-quantum signatures would run alongside existing elliptic curve systems instead of replacing them at once.
Ripple said that approach matters for a live financial network. A hard switch, the company argued, would create too much disruption.
The company framed the goal as migration rather than shock. The roadmap, therefore, spreads the shift across stages instead of forcing one abrupt cutover.

By 2028, Ripple said the XRP Ledger should reach full post-quantum readiness. The company plans a formal production upgrade to deliver full protection against quantum computers.
Finally, the last phase would bring native post-quantum cryptography to the network. Ripple said that change would move through the XRPL amendment process.
Ripple described the roadmap as infrastructure planning, not speculative science fiction. The company said the threat now carries enough weight to shape preparation timelines.
In its blog post, Ripple wrote, “The threat has moved from theoretical to credible, and preparation timelines now matter.”
