YouTube plans to introduce the next-generation AV2 video codec in early 2027, a move that could improve streaming quality while reducing bandwidth use. The rollout will initially cover YouTube’s web version, with the technology also expected to support enhanced multi-view video experiences.

The update follows the Alliance for Open Media’s release of AV2 specifications earlier this year. The codec is expected to deliver approximately 25% to 32% better compression efficiency than its predecessor, AV1.

AV2 Could Improve Streaming Quality and Reduce Data Use

AV2 is designed to deliver higher video quality at the same bitrate or maintain comparable quality while using less bandwidth. For viewers, this could mean sharper videos and fewer interruptions, particularly when internet connections are slow or network capacity is limited.

The technology could also benefit users watching videos on data-limited connections. However, the actual improvements will depend on how streaming platforms implement the codec and whether devices support AV2 decoding.

YouTube Engineering Director Des Keane confirmed the company’s plans through the Alliance for Open Media. He said that, as of March 19, 2026, more than 90% of YouTube’s catalog, weighted by watch time, was available in AV1.

The company is now preparing to move towards AV2, which it expects to deliver better video quality and introduce new multi-video capabilities.

Web Rollout to Come First

YouTube plans to introduce AV2 on its web platform as early as 2027. The company has not announced a specific timeline for its Android or iOS apps, or for television devices.

Google Chrome Engineering Vice President Jim Bankoski said that YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video were exploring the format. He also highlighted its potential to enable improved multi-view video and more efficient, higher-resolution video conferencing.

These capabilities could eventually support experiences in which viewers watch multiple video feeds simultaneously.

Wider Adoption May Take Time

Despite YouTube’s plans, AV2 adoption across smartphones, televisions, and other media devices could take longer. Hardware and software support will be essential before the codec becomes widely available.

AV1, the previous-generation codec, was released in 2018, but device-level adoption took time. AV2 faces a similar challenge as manufacturers work towards supporting the newer technology.

For now, YouTube’s early 2027 web rollout represents a significant step towards wider AV2 adoption. However, the timing of its arrival across mobile apps and supported hardware remains unclear.
