xAI's Grok AI to Get Standalone App: A Direct Challenge to ChatGPT

Free version is already available in select regions like New Zealand

Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, is gearing up to launch a standalone app for its Grok AI chatbot. The new Grok AI app is expected to make a debut in early December 2024. This move positions Grok to gain a competitive edge against rivals, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

Current Access Limited to X

Grok is currently only available on X (formerly Twitter) via X Premium and Premium Plus subscriptions. Unlike competitors that offer free standalone apps for Android and iOS, Grok does not offer a free-tier option. However, xAI is reportedly testing a free version in select regions like New Zealand.

Free Version Usage Restrictions

The free version, wherever available, has certain limits in terms of usage:

1. Queries: Limited up to 10 queries every two hours on Grok-2 and 20 queries for Grok-2 mini.

2. Image Analysis: Only three queries per day are allowed.

3. Eligibility: Open to accounts older than seven days and associated with a phone number.

Even though xAI is limiting the free version, it is expected to soon open the free version to more regions.

Grok's Expanding Feature Set

Grok AI, launched in August 2024, includes advanced features like image generation and image understanding. In October, xAI introduced capabilities to analyze uploaded images, allowing users to ask questions about visuals. Upcoming updates will enable Grok to retrieve and interpret information from documents, including PDFs and Word files.

The new Grok AI app launch will bridge the gap between accessibility and enhanced usability. Thus, this anticipated app could significantly elevate xAI’s position in the AI chatbot market.
