Apple boasts innovations that continue to set the standards in wearable technology. Every update from the tech giant aims to give the best to the users. With WatchOS 26, Workout Buddy is an AI fitness trainer that provides voice-guided feedback as you work out.
Using Apple Intelligence, Workout Buddy analyzes past performance, such as pace, heart rate, and Activity Rings, to offer personalized encouragement and guidance.
The voice is modeled after Fitness+ trainers to coach one in a more human-like style. This feature runs entirely on-device, keeping the information private while offering tailored fitness support.
The Workout app now features a simpler interface, offering large, dedicated buttons for launching workouts, controlling playlists, and switching views. The integration with Apple Music automatically gears song suggestions according to the workout type and the user's previous listening habits.
Workout Buddy will even inform users when to rest, applaud a milestone, or announce splits—all while retaining the user's flow. This synergy aids usability by keeping workouts varied, fun, and motivating.
Workout Buddy changes on the go based on bout pace, changes in heart rate, and other performance indicators. For strength training, Workout Buddy counts reps; for runs, it dials in on splits. On-device processing using Apple Intelligence means that personal data does not leave the device.
Much like the privacy-first architecture, Apple’s brand reputation information is evident as a keeper of sensitive health data.
Announced at WWDC 2025, watchOS 26 supports Apple Watch Series 6 and later (including SE and Ultra), so users will need an iPhone with Apple Intelligence. The Workout Buddy initially runs in English and offers a limited number of workouts, including running, cycling, walking, a HIIT workout, and strength training.
The update also brings Liquid Glass UI updates and new wrist-flick gestures. The public beta will be available in July, with a full release scheduled for fall 2025.
Workout Buddy brings a change to the fitness wearables market, rather than just providing users with data recorded on a watch (such as distance traveled, heart rate, etc.). Workout Buddy, when downloaded, transforms the Apple Watch into a personal coach, providing guidance and motivational voice feedback while effortlessly syncing with music. The on-device AI assures user privacy while delivering rich, compelling, and innovative fitness coaching.
As personal health becomes increasingly AI-enabled, Apple's introduction of Workout Buddy may serve as a model for 'innovation with user trust.'
