WhatsApp is developing a new guest calling feature that could remove one of the biggest barriers to joining its voice and video calls. People without a WhatsApp account may soon be able to join calls through a secure web link, without downloading the app or creating an account.
Feature tracker WaBetaInfo reported that the feature remains under development and is not yet available for beta testing.
According to WaBetaInfo, “ The Meta-owned instant messaging platform is developing guest calls which would allow users to join a call through a web link without downloading the app or signing up for an account. So far, the feature is currently under development and is not available for testing.”
The feature will be an upgrade of WhatsApp’s existing call-link system. Users will be able to create a call link from the Calls tab and share it with another person.
The recipient will then open the link in a web browser. Instead of being redirected to an app download or account-registration page, the person could enter the call as a guest through WhatsApp Web.
WhatsApp is also planning safeguards for guest calls. A host will have to approve a guest before that person can enter the conversation.
The approval requirement will reportedly apply to every participant joining without a WhatsApp account. Hosts will also be able to remove guests from an active call if necessary. This will help prevent unwanted participants from entering calls through links that have been forwarded or shared more widely than intended.
