WhatsApp launched ‘WhatsApp bill payments’ in India, bringing routine payments directly into its messaging app. The Meta-owned platform introduced the feature on September 3, 2026, across India.
The service uses Bharat Connect to provide users with access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories. It covers electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card, and loan payments. The rollout will reach Android and iOS users gradually over the coming weeks.
The new feature aims to simplify bill payments for electricity, gas, and credit cards without switching between different apps. Users can tap the Rs. (₹) icon, choose a category, and select the required biller. After entering account details, WhatsApp fetches the latest outstanding amount for review. Payments can then be made using UPI, debit, or credit cards.
The service also adds useful tools for recurring household payments. Previously paid billers appear on the Payments Home screen for faster access. Multiple accounts can also remain linked with the same biller. This setup can help manage separate home, office or family accounts from one place.
The launch strengthens WhatsApp's growing financial services presence in India. The platform already supports mobile recharges, metro ticket bookings and citizen services through chatbots. Bharat Connect now extends that utility into a wider bill payment network.
Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head of Meta India, said the company wants bill payments to feel ‘as effortless as sending a message.’ The feature targets everyday payments while reducing the need for multiple payment platforms.
The gradual rollout means some accounts may not show Bill Payments immediately. Users can update WhatsApp and check again as availability expands across India.
