WhatsApp is adding new security features to give users better protection against account theft and scams. According to reports, these security features are especially designed to give users more protection against account takeovers and suspicious calls. The biggest change that the Meta platform is going to add is a stronger two-step verification system.
Now, WhatsApp users can set a six-digit PIN for verification, but after the update rolls out, they will be able to set a longer password with letters, numbers, and special characters. This adds another layer of safety if someone gets access to their login code.
For Android users, there will be another round of security. WhatsApp will now show more information about calls from unknown numbers. Users will be able to see if the call is from another country, or if the contact is in any common group with them. This will give them more clarity before answering an unknown call.
Additionally, both Android and iOS users will be able to set more than one passkey for their accounts. The platform mentioned that more than 1 million people worldwide use passkeys that can be anything, including Face ID, fingerprint, or screen lock. Setting two will give them more benefits.
The new features arrive as scammers continue to target messaging apps. WhatsApp has already added warnings for suspicious requests to link a device. These warnings can help users spot tricks designed to steal their account.
Meta is also testing an AI-based Scam Alert feature for WhatsApp. The tool checks suspicious messages from unknown contacts for signs of scams. It runs the check on the user’s device and can suggest actions such as blocking or reporting the chat.
