US stocks fell on Thursday, August 20, as rising oil prices and Treasury yields revived inflation fears. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.32% to 52,759.21, while the S&P 500 lost 0.87% and NASDAQ declined 1%. Wall Street faced pressure as US-Iran tensions lifted crude prices and rising bond yields reduced demand for equities.

The selloff hit US markets as investors reacted to higher borrowing costs, energy risks and weak consumer signals. Brent crude gained about 2.4% after President Donald Trump threatened Iran, while the 10-year Treasury yield approached 4.70%. The 30-year yield climbed above 5.24%, reviving concerns over inflation and debt.

Oil Prices Add to Inflation Concerns

Oil prices became a major concern after Trump warned Iran as talks involving the Strait of Hormuz stalled. Higher crude prices can increase transportation and production costs across the economy. Investors fear energy inflation could limit the Federal Reserve’s room for future rate cuts.

Treasury yields added pressure after the bond market’s brief relief faded. The Treasury had announced larger bond buybacks, which initially pushed yields lower. Yields reversed course within a day, leaving investors focused on fiscal deficits and borrowing.

“It’s a resumption in the increase in bond yields across the curve,” said Mona Mahajan, investment strategist at Edward Jones. She added that the reversal came ‘within 24 hours’ of the Treasury move.

Walmart Shares Slide 9.2%

Walmart intensified the market decline as shares plunged 9.2% after weaker comparable sales growth. US comparable sales rose 2.6%, missing expectations, while higher fuel costs pressured household spending. The results dragged consumer-focused sectors lower.

Energy stocks offered a rare bright spot as the S&P 500 energy sector gained 0.4%. Crypto-related stocks advanced, while broader equities struggled.

A Brief Roundup

The market now faces volatility as investors track oil prices, Treasury yields, Iran tensions and upcoming economic data. The latest decline marked Wall Street’s weakest session in three weeks.
