NPCI launched UPI AutoPay on August 31, 2026, across India’s ecosystem, allowing users to automate subscriptions and EMI payments through mandates. UPI apps can also handle approvals and deductions.

The feature aims to prevent missed renewals and EMI due dates through a one-time automatic authorization. Users can create a UPI mandate, review details, and approve recurring debits using the UPI PIN.

For subscriptions, users can open their UPI apps, select plans, and choose UPI AutoPay as the payment option. The app displays the merchant, amount, frequency, and mandate validity for careful review before approval.

After approval, users can authorize mandates through UPI PIN, allowing eligible recurring payments without authentication each time. NPCI has listed OTT subscriptions, utility bills, insurance, mutual funds, and EMI payments among supported categories.

For EMIs, users can navigate to relevant repayment sections within their loan or credit card apps and choose UPI AutoPay or an e-mandate option for supported lenders.

Users can enter EMI amounts, due dates, and tenures before approving requests. The process reduces payment steps and helps avoid late fees and missed deadlines.

Users can easily view, pause, modify, or cancel mandates through app settings. NPCI has also clarified that customers receive pre-debit notifications at least 24 hours before scheduled payment execution.

RBI rules have raised recurring transaction limits without additional authentication to Rs. 1 lakh for categories including mutual funds, insurance premiums, and credit card bill payments.

A failed debit can trigger notifications when the linked account lacks sufficient funds for deductions. Some UPI apps and lenders also offer retry mechanisms.

Users should carefully verify merchant names, amounts, frequencies, and validity before approving every mandate. Regularly reviewing mandates also helps remove unused subscriptions and unwanted recurring charges during billing cycles.
