UOB has appointed Tan Choon Hin as its head of ASEAN and Greater China, with him set to take up the new role on September 1, 2026. Tan is currently the bank’s deputy chief risk officer and will be promoted to supervise UOB’s business across Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and mainland China. His role will also cover branches in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Reportedly, he will directly report to Chief Executive Officer Wee Ee Cheong.

The appointment comes as companies increasingly diversify their supply chains and expand across Southeast Asia and China. UOB looks to capture more cross-border business in Asia. Tan will also lead the bank’s foreign direct investment advisory unit. The team helps companies set up or grow their business in new markets. In the past six months, it has supported more than 300 expansion plans. These projects have a combined expected investment of S$5.6 billion.

UOB Targets Asia Growth

More companies are moving parts of their business across Asia. When they enter a new country, they need help with payments, funding, and local business links. This is where banks such as UOB can play a bigger role. UOB already has a presence in several key Asian markets. It can help businesses connect with local teams while they set up new operations.

Tan’s new role places these markets under a single regional leader. It could help UOB respond more quickly when companies seek support across multiple countries. The S$5.6 billion figure also shows how much business could be up for grabs. As more firms expand across borders, banks have a chance to build stronger ties with them.

Tan to Lead Regional Growth

Tan will report to UOB CEO Wee Ee Cheong. His appointment gives the bank a senior leader focused on its ASEAN and Greater China operations.

For UOB, the plan is clear. The bank wants to use its regional reach to support more companies as they expand across Asia. If that growth continues, cross-border banking could become an even bigger part of its business.
