Ubisoft has reportedly canceled an unannounced Far Cry project as part of a change in its development strategy. Reports reveal that the extraction shooter that was in development for several years is now replaced by an ambitious open-world FPS where players are taken to a world in which the story evolves based on their interactions with the game world.
According to industry veteran Tom Henderson, Ubisoft has canceled a Far Cry game that was in development under the code name Maverick. Henderson reported, “The new game comes in the wake of issues surrounding another FAR CRY game in development, codenamed Maverick, an extraction shooter that has since been canceled.” The leaker has mentioned that the replacement is now codenamed Kodiak, where ‘player interactions and player-driven stories take center stage.’
The reported cancellation does not mean the next main Far Cry game is in trouble. Far Cry 7, also known by its reported codename Project Blackbird, is still believed to be in development. However, in a report, Henderson has stated that the next Far Cry game has been facing repeated internal delays. Reports suggest the game has faced multiple internal development challenges.
There’s not much information available about the game. Earlier leaks have claimed that Far Cry 7 is set in Alaska and will feature an extraction mode where players will fight brutal wildlife in a race for survival. Ubisoft has not confirmed these details, so fans should treat them as rumors.
