Tensions grew between the US and Russia this week during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. After a war of words with Russian leaders, US President Donald Trump ordered two nuclear submarines to move closer to Russian waters. This happened soon after former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned of a possible nuclear response.

Putin Responds with Missile Plans

Russian President Vladimir Putin added to the pressure. He announced that Russia would place a new nuclear missile system called "Oreshnik" in Belarus by the end of the year. These moves caused concern across the world, with fears of a bigger conflict.

However, instead of raising the tension further, Trump made a surprising decision. He chose to send his envoy, Steve Witkoff, to Moscow. The goal of the visit is to talk with Russian officials and try to find a way to reduce the conflict in Ukraine.

From Submarines to Peace Talks

Russian leaders welcomed the visit. They called the step helpful and a chance to open communication again. While the nuclear submarines are still in place, the US is now focusing more on peace talks than military action.

Some experts think this change means the US is stepping back a bit. Others say it’s a smart move to avoid a serious clash. Trump’s team has said the submarines were a safety step, but now the attention is on finding a way forward.

Putin is still standing strong. His plan to place nuclear missiles in Belarus has not changed. At the same time, the Kremlin is asking for more careful use of the word “nuclear.” They mentioned the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and stressed the need to keep things under control.

The situation shows how the Russia-Ukraine war is not just about the battlefield. It also includes nuclear threats, trade problems, and shifting global ties. Trump’s switch from sending nuclear submarines to starting talks through Steve Witkoff is a clear example of this new mix of power and diplomacy.

Right now, it’s unclear who has the upper hand. But Trump’s move to talk instead of fight may be a sign that both sides want to avoid a bigger crisis.
