Tinder has rolled out its Face Check feature in India to address issues related to fake profiles and boost user confidence. The new system requires new members to record a short video selfie, which is then compared to their profile photos. If the match passes, the user gets a “Photo Verified” badge.
This move marks a bold step in the fight against bots and impersonators. The company says Face Check will strengthen verification and make the platform safer. Yoel Roth, Senior Vice President of Trust & Safety at Match Group, called the launch timely. He said online authenticity has never mattered more. The feature offers a new tool against fake profiles, fraud, and bots.
Tinder already provides safety tools like ID verification, warning prompts, reporting tools, and behavioural nudges. Face Check builds on those by offering a more personal check. The rollout is currently available for new users in India. Over time, Tinder will extend it to existing accounts.
The decision comes amid rising user demand for better protection. Tinder’s Modern Dating Report shows that more than one in three Indian daters value profile verification highly. Many already follow safety practices: meeting in public places, sharing plans, or video calling before meeting in person.
Beyond India, Face Check has also appeared in markets such as the US, Canada, Colombia, and Australia. In the US, Tinder is testing a mandatory facial recognition check in California.
Roth noted that clever fraudsters can fake phone numbers or devices, but spoofing a live face is much harder. He explained how the video selfie collects data from multiple angles. Additionally, proactive AI detection was used to filter out over 90% of the deleted fake accounts in India.
Yoel added that Tinder works closely with Indian law enforcement. The company responds to police requests within 24 hours and supports investigations through a dedicated portal.
The move to launch Face Check arrives amid rising cases of dating-app scams in India. Extortion and impersonation through fake profiles have become serious issues.
Face Check repositions authenticity at the core of online dating. By requiring biometric verification, Tinder hopes to reduce deceit and make connections more genuine. The feature may reshape how safety and trust operate in the Indian dating space.
